Question about the VIN Check-sum

Question about the VIN Check-sum

Lets say the VIN is 1G1FP33F1NL119097 (my 92)
does anyone know how GM used the check-sum digit? I have over 100 92Z28's registered and can't figure it out.
I know normally in the military we took something like a latitude and longitude say
3615N 17000W and it would come out to
3615N5 17000W8
Thus by adding the numbers together you arrived at the checksum and could determine if the numbers arrived intact or where garbled in transmission.
I can't get that logic to work on VIN numbers.

The VIN decoder on this site also tells how the checksum is calculated.

Geez, I was cryptologist in the Navy for 20 years. I would have needed the computers at NSA to crack that one!
