Engine block ##? What do they mean

I have a 83 L69 Z28 car. However the block # I found today was 14010203. If this isn't the original motor like a few have been saying(should be last 7 of vin) where did this motor come from? It is stamped 305, so I know that and it's to strong to be a LG4 but where did this come from?

To see if it's the car's original engine, look at the block deck where the head bolts to it, right behind the alternator. You can see it if you take the upper alt bracket off and look behind it with a flashlight. There'a a little "pad" of deck that sticks out, maybe 2" wide x 1" deep, that will have 2 strings of numbers stamped on it (if the block hasn't been decked in a rebuild). THe first string is the factory's code for what kind of motor it is; I don't have any way of decoding them myself, but some people on this BBS do. The 2nd string is the serial number portion of the VIN. If it's the original, it will match the car's VIN.

Matt's been having a small coronary over figuring out whether or not the '83 has the original motor or not. I can verify this thing feels A LOT stronger than any LG4 I have seen, even with 170k miles.

Chill Matt, we'll figure it out

Well, I have checked the whole block top to bottom front to back. There are no numbers on the front on the side the are some... on the front they are stamped 305/ on the back pass side it had A 7 that pattern with a
D N arrow pointing to the a and 3 E 7 below the above. I am going nuts here. Anyone who can read these codes or can tell me where to get them decoded it would be a huge help. Is Rb83l69 the only one who wants to help? Thanks RB83L69 for leading me to the numbers.

Sorry, I just saw this (I rarely surf now a days). We are all here to help, provided we actually see the thread. For more info on block numbers (and where I go to decode blocks) go over to MadMike's page. He has all the info you are looking for (basically what RB posted).

Thanks alot! I looked up what I could and it is a block car/ truck block for 80-84. I have to imagine that this is original motor. I now have the info I was looking for even though the actual vin/block #would have been nice.
