quick question before i buy this IROC

someone is selling an IROC and says that it has a 5.7 that was factory, but put it in after the car
had 100,000 miles. now it has 70,000 on the new engine. and its an Automatic. did a 86 IROC ever
come with a factory 5.7 and Auto?

No not in 86. The 350 TPI showed up in 87 for production F-bodies. The best motor available in 86 was the 305 TPI. From 87-90 Irocs were available w/ 350's. The motor may just be from another year Iroc. But in 86 no 350's.

Hope that helps.

Four TransAm's are not enough. Firebirds for all.

Actually there were about 50 or so made in 86 with the 350.... Too bad they were test cars tho that came with the 1LE package if I remember right.

The 1LE didn't come out until '88.

For clarity's sake I chose not to mention those 50 so as not to confuse psycho50.

but if it's not the original motor, none of this really matters anyway. As long as they took the proper steps when installing that 350, I'd see no problem. It should have gotten a PROM from an 87 350 Camaro, as well as 24lb/hr injectors.

The problem with a non-original motor is that you never really know what you get. Is it really a 350? There's no way to know unless you run the block numbers or pull a head. Even if it is a 350, it could be a crap $1200 reman with a round camshaft and dinky heads. It's real tough to evaluate a reman motor unless the owner is honest and can present recepits with corresponding technical information.

Why would a stock 350 need 24# injectors? All stock 5.7's came with 22# injectors.
Curious as to your thinking.
About the car, unless it's in really good shape I'd pass. Always risky buying someone elses race car, and if it needed a new engine already, it's probably been abused.

Just so I understand this, you WANT??? a car with 170,000 miles? Why am I thinking that this car probably needs new everything? Its bad enough starting with a car that has 70,000 miles, but 170,000 with a backyard engine swap somewhere in the middle? I'd run far far away from this nightmare, unless its $500 and you have a dependable mode of transpo that you can depend on for a few years while you fix this other car.

Sorry. I meant 22. My car has 24s due to the cost of 22s as well as my other mods, so I'm just used to spewing info about 24s. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem Jim! Just thought I might have missed something.
I think we all agree, step away from this IROC. There are better ones out there.
