Just bought an '87 IROC-Z... Couple questions.

I purchased this car earlier today and I am not 100% sure it's a genuine IROC... it's got the door decals, Z/28 badges in the right places and what looks like a 34mm front swaybar and the correct IROC wheels. My main question is about the speedometer, it only goes up to 85 and I thought that the IROCs got 145 speedos that year... It's supposedly got a 350 now (sounds like it too), but the VIN says it started life out as an LG4 car. I didn't look at the RPO list, but is there an RPO that only IROCs got?

Thanks for the help!

For those that are interested... The bad: Front seats are shot and the carpet is pretty beat, it's missing the radio and the clearcoat is dull in spots and theres a bit of cracking on the front bumper cover. The good: no rust underneath, no rust-through on the panels, no leakage from the motor, motor purrs like a big kitten, exhaust smells clean, The T-Top seals look great and the power windows work... It's mechanically solid. $1100

Your best bet (and probably ONLY bet) is to validate the codes on that RPO sticker. Can't recall the exact RPO, but it should be on the thirdgen.org main page somewhere. By any chance does the dash emblem have the IROC-Z under the Z28?

I only glanced at it, I could have sworn it was the correct emblem, but not 100% sure.

I spaced out and forgot to look for the RPO sheet while I was checking the other things, hopefully it's still in the car... it's been abused a bit, but the body is in such good shape and it still drives so I figured IROC or not it was worth saving.

RPO list is located under the console lid on the 87 model.

I already bought the car, just had to get registration and plates today, I'm picking it up tomorrow morning. I wasn't too concerned about authenticity as it all looks correct, but we'll see if there's an RPO sheet... I know they tend to go missing sometimes. I felt it was a good enough deal at the time even if it turned out to be a fake that I'd take the chance of it being a fake.

Or, if it doesn't have it, just go down to the GM dealer with the VIN and they can print it out for ya'.

This is a question that's asked frequently. Two areas to check: Wonderbar and the door placard, which should list 16" wheels. If the placard says 15" wheels, then be suspicious. From the looks of the car, I'd guess it's legit (hood louvers, black headlight buckets, wheels, decals--I assume it's equipped with the IROC grill and fog lamps. Is there a OEM fog lamp switch in the interior?)

Well I brought it home and I'm quite sure it's a 350 now... it looks like a GM crate with centerbolt heads, dash pad emblem says IROC-Z and there's a factory fog light switch, though aftermarket lights are currently hooked up. There is no RPO sheet on the inside of the console... there is residue from the sheet.

I snapped this pic of it on my way into the house: (It's way too cold out to take more pics!)

Yeah I got that too and the P designates Z/28... I really doubt it's a clone, the pieces of the puzzle fit together too well.

The big question now could be answered if you find your build sheet. Word is it's either under the back seats or under the plastic panels in the trunk. That should confirm any suspicions, but good luck with that.
