noobee-check digit-what does it mean?

My chilton manual for my RS explained very clearly, but I still do not understand the check digit thing. what's more, I am looking at another 92 only this is a z-28. the vin # is 1G1FP23 F3 NL 105695. From what I have read on the forum, I believe the only way I can be sure it is a z is from the RPO codes? Is that right? Yes, I do understand it is a 5.0 TPI. Any help is deeply appreciated.

The check digit is a code that's calculated from the rest of the digits in the VIN to help detect any errors in typing or scanning.

The only way to know the car is a Z28 is to check the RPO codes. Sometimes you the VIN sometimes can tell you that a car is not a Z28 if it says that the car originally had a V6 or an L4, but that's about it.

If it is a 5.0 tpi then it's a z28 you could not get tpi in a RS unless its a b4c but those got 350's so if it's tpi then its a z28

To figure the Check digit, you take each letter and assign them a number, then you take each number and multiply them by another number and then add all of those numbers together, you divide by 11 and then the remainder is the check digit.

Confused?

Yes that car is indeed a TPI Z28 car...
