91 Formula in Maui blue?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1991-...ayphotohosting

Note the numerous errors in the listing...

I have never seen a 91+ Formula in this colour. Maybe a short year option?

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

Back in early 98, when I was looking for a new thirdgen to replace my 83 T/A, I looked at a 91 Formula that was Maui Blue.

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

Ive seen one B4 in that color. Formula and all. Rare color in any model. Low miles and a nise car. The FORMULA decal is misplaced on the door. Could be a repaint...the rear decal is MIA too. Underhood is matched. So IMO its an orig color car. Check the VIN. 305TPI? Formula ID?

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

The 4.7 litre 350 LT1 does tend to catch the eye.The 4.7 could be a misprint but that's clearly a TPI motor. But the eighth digit of the VIN being a F(LB9 305 TPI as Mikz86TA pointed out) discounts an original B2L/L98 car(as does the car being a 5 speed). The underhood and door jamb paint match the exterior but I agree possibly an exterior repaint. The door jam decal also indicates 245/50ZR-16.

All said I do like the color but it's funny how many mistakes occur on Ebay ads.

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

I messaged the guy and pointed out the VIN/Motor/Tranny discrepency. I told him thats why there isnt any bids. A buyer of that car will 90% of the time be an enthusiest and already know.

Rough? it looks pretty good to me, worth the 4k for it with only 56k miles on the car. Just put the stickers in the right spot and it should be fine. Probably a repaint from the crappy clear that was put on the cars, thus the reason from the decal placement being wrong.

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

I agree with thr repaint. I was looking at a 1990 Formula back in 94, just B4 I bought my 86 TA. I didnt know until I popped the hood it was a 350car. They never bothered to put the decals back on it...just the lower stripes between the Black and Silver. It was a GM-paid re-paint. Might have been the case here too. And they couldve had anyone do it. I dont think its a bad ride, but would offer $3K if I had the $$$$ Miles are great.

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

Dammit. . . That's what color my car used to be. . .

1990 RPO - 23U Exterior, Medium Maui Blue Metallic -till' someone went and repainted it a darker shade. I think it looks real nice, If i ever get enough $$$ saved it, I'm gonna revert back to orignal color.

And I don't think I've ever seen a Firebird in that color. . .

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

I used to own a car that looked just like that less the wheels.

The blue paint in 1991 had some issues with pealing due to lack of primer. They used a really expensive sealer that was not UV stable and the blue paint allowed the UV rays to attack the sealer. Then the paint would peal. I suspect that is what may have happened to this car.

The door decals do appear to be high on the door, but there was no "Offical" placement from the factory, only front to back. The Wheels are possibly original as they were an option in late 1991 and thru 1992.

Obvioulsy its not an LT1, but a TPI.

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

The guy responed to my message on E-bay. He said thanks for pointing out the mistake and he fixed it. There is additional info now on his auction about it being a 305 TPI and not a 5.7 er 4.7 motor. hehehe I just think he doesnt know much about cars and got some wrong info. Probably was talking to someone who 'knows all about cars' and got bad info. hehehe

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

I have a 91' Camaro RS that is Medium Maui Blue.I am rebuilding it now.Hard to find paint for it,but the engine is painted the same color..Looks pretty damn good.I've been able to find small rattle-can spray from Auto Zone and NAPA,but they usually only stock one can at a time.Sherwin Williams is the only place that will mix it for me,and that color is a little off.I havent seen many, actually any,Camaro's with this color option.Mine is original color, and I plan for it to stay that way..

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

Go to an paint supply shop, they should be able to get the mix for you...

Sherwin Williams, PPG, Dupont, all should have the mix codes, you just need to find the WAnumber It should be 9537 IIRC

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

To know for sure, look for the W66 RPO code on the SPID sticker. The Formula and Firebird both shared the same 1G2FS VIN prefix.

If the SPID sticker is missing, because it's a 1991, you could enter your VIN into Compnine's database and look for the Formula RPO code:

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

Not really rare, it was not available on all models, I do not think it was available on the Z28 or the IROC, and I do not think it was available on the GTA either... I have seen Trans Am's, Formulas, Firebirds (Base) all painted that color

Really quick some Maui Blue 23U production info

1990 - 2500 Camaros, 1178 Firebird ( NO TA's GTA's or Z28's
1991 - At least 3658 Camaros & 902 Firebirds ( NO TA's, GTA's or Z28's )

Re: 91 Formula in Maui blue?

I remember seeing many in this color on the lots when I bought my car in 91. I wanted a black Formula, and it was tough finding one. The teals, blues and greens were pretty popular.

My Bird had to go back and be repainted. The clear was peeling off the black and turning gray the first summer I had it. The dealership I bought it through had a full shop and they painted the car. They had it a week. When I came in the decals were improperly placed. I complained and they actually brought another Formula on the lot over to convince me otherwise, but they saw how wrong it was when there was another next to it. They didn't want to fix it, but they did. It was gone a few more days, but they did it right. The only spot that went bad again was the hatch area just below the center cutout of the spoiler. The adhesion failed and it peeled. It just took 10 years this time.
