Might buy an 88 Iroc. Need help.

The guy says that the car was broken into and someone stole the VIN tag. He says he can prove that the engine is a 5.7 350 by the stamp or tag on the block. What would this look like and what is a secondary way to tell if it is a 350 for sure? I'm really excited to buy this car I just have to make sure it's the real deal. Thanks a lot guys.

P.S. I'm new to the boards, but I have read almost every first page of each section because this is such a great forum. I appreciate all the knowledge here and look forward to being part of the action.

Welcome to TGO if you haven't been already.
On the missing VIN tag there's another member going thru this with his car an he's not sure yet if he's going to be able to keep her or if she will be impounded. The VIN is stamped in other places on the car.I would go to your local DMV/Police and check if they have a history on the car.Does the person have the title/registration for the car?The VIN would be on there. If the seller hesittaes in providing info or cooperation then your best bet is to walk away and keep looking for a legit car.

Re: Might buy an 88 Iroc. Need help.

I bought a ’89 IROC that had been stolen at one time and had a state issued VIN riveted to the door jamb. I called the state office of the BMV and told them the state issued VIN and they told me it was the right car, but all they knew was it was a Camaro, when I got my title they put the IROC back on it. I found the original in the compartment on the left side of the trunk, I had to pull back the insulation and it was right there. Another thing and I am not for sure if this would work on the ’88 or not, but on the ’89 the IROC was the only one you could get with 16” wheels, so I checked on the tire sticker on the drivers door and saw it said 16”. You can look up the tread where I asked about this, there was an answer by coolram62 that might help. If you look back in History/Restoration to 8-18-07 the title is IROC VIN. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

actually you could get any year Iroc with 16" wheels, very few Irocs came with the standard 15" wheels

Run from the car. Unless you want an expensive lawn ornament.
