Questions about a new bird

First off, it has been a LONG time since I've posted on here. Doubt anyone remembers me lol. I was in a wreck back in April that totaled my 89 and was just too sick to come back and post picks and such. Well I've been driving around a 97 Jeep Cherokee since then but I just miss a sporty car. Driving the Jeep just does not give me the same feeling as my Poncho did. Well I found a 92 for sale around the area at a used car lot. It "is" a 92 Formula with 16" salad shooters, 4 wheel disk, WS6 performance suspension, 305 TPI and 5 spd. There is 133k on the clock. The interior is in good shape, little dirty and a small rip on the drivers seat. The exterior paint is decent in most spots but the clear coat is peeling on the power bulge, there's a baseball sized dent in the front of the driver side fender, and the aero spoiler is pretty well cracked. I have not been able to hear how the engine runs as one of the salesman had the key and was not in yet. However I noticed the accelerator pedal was on the floor and checked it out. The cable seems to be stretched, maybe it just needs adjusting, but the throttle will only open around 25% I just wanted some opinions on how much people think the car might be worth?

ps- attached is a picture of my bird post wreck I just gotta go back!!

Re: Questions about a new bird

first off i would suggest www.kbb.com, they have you fill in options and then fill in the condition, section by section, that will give you a value to go there with at least that holds some value in the market. as far as personally, from what you told me, i would try to get it for like 700-1000, but i don't know what kinda used car shop your talking to so, they could try and milk it.

Re: Questions about a new bird

I did KBB first thing: full retail was 4k, excellent private seller was 2600, good was 2400. I didnt want to include their asking price because I did not want to influence you all. I originally found it on autotrader for 3,999. However when I went to the lot I didnt mention that I saw it there and asked the guy what he was asking and he said 3500. Hopefully I can get him down a good bit more. I didn't bother tryin to negotiate with him monday as I need fully understand how much I am willing to go on the car. I really miss my old bird and I dont want to do an emotional buy.

Re: Questions about a new bird

its worth some certain amount yes, each vehicle in this world is worth its own certain amount

we cant find out or know especially over the internet, there is a myriad factors involved with this, how it runs, how it actualy looks IRL, and so on

but your goal should be to get it for as least amount of $ as possible

unless it is someone that you dont want to lowball

a 90s jeepo chjeokee hahaha, JUNK

dont look at the transmission in that thing the wrong way or it will puke on you haha, those were virtually the crappiest most unreliable auto trans chrysler ever made , they are as bad as the taurus 4 speed autos of the 80s and 90s ,

except even worse,

these made the GM TH200C seem like a great thing

Not to hijack this dudes thread... but man...are you serious? Ive owned jeeps for awhile now, my GF has one, my two friends both have late 90s XJs... My current Cherokee has 220k miles. Original trans. AND its running 33's, geared and locked axles...and gets beat upon regularily. Trans never gave me or anyone else Ive ever heard of any issues... I challenge anyone that says Cherokee's or jeeps in general are junk to come up with good reason as to why... You CAN NOT beat a 4.0..and as long as you dont let it rust into a pyle, they'll last for ever, and go anywhere in the process. One of the best all around MPVs ever produced in my opinion.

TO the O.P... Sorry about that...but I hear people say Jeeps are junk from time to time and it bugs me. haha. Man...your yellow bird doesnt look that bad... Im sure Im missing something and its hard to tell by the pics... But its too bad they totalled that. Mine was MUCH worse and it wasnt totalled.

As for the worth of the new car, thats really hard to judge as others have said. Whats it worth TO YOU is the more important question. Definetly dont settle because there are plenty of good cars out there for good prices. The accel pedal thing wouldnt bother me. Could just be a busted cable. Make sure the actual throttle linkage on the TB works though...

How much is the lot asking for it???

J.

Re: Questions about a new bird

yea i was lowballing it completely, because w/out doing kbb and knowing the condition in person and knowing where you're from, being that matters as well, i was just throwing a number out there. the car is in no way excellent, if you read the description, less than 5% of all vehicles fall into that, it's either good or fair...and if your saying the miles are high, and the paint is bad, i would push your mental value a little towards fair value, do the average between the 2 (good and fair). You want to look at retail value becauase thats what they expect to get for it. I would say listen to the engine, check over the body with a fine tooth comb, check the underbody and make sure it's not rusting, bent up, scratched up too badly or anything like that, check the exhaust and engine compartment, see what your going to need to replace in the first months of ownership, and if you can talk it down to a price you like, and you like the car...go for it, but just remember...there are MANY more out there, you may have to go a little distance to get something you want, but if you like it more than this one, and you woun'dt have to do ANYTHING to it to enjoy it...go for it! Either way best of luck and post pics of the car next time you go there and we can try and help ya from there.

Re: Questions about a new bird

Unless you need to use there finacing and really get bent over, DO NOT buy from a used car lot. Especially one that the salesman carry there keys around in there pocket. The car lot got the car from an auction. It was proably abandoned and the owner knew it was a piece of crap. It has been dogged out for years and they proably paid 200.00 and now they want to unload. They dont even have a set price on it. Your desciption sound like a overpriced piece of junk. If you wnat a taken care of good vehicle, go to the for sale post at this site. For 3 grand you can get a car that you can enjoy
