I suspect that it was not an actual option package on the car rather he got a package from the dealership and had it installed.

I'm pretty sure this was the case. I have an old GMPP catalog I got around 1989 or thereabouts and SPL stuff (individual pieces and the package) was available from GM.

Confirmed. My 92 GTA has this package.
The year that it is be sure it has the Tri-Y headers and NOT the 4-into-1 headers, that way you know if it's real or pieced together at a later time. Mine was installed by the original selling dealership and finanaced in with the sale of the car, I have all the original paperwork prooving it in storage. By the time I had bought the car all the parts had been removed by another dealership after it was traded in before it was resold. It took me like 3-4 years to find all of the 100% EXACT specific parts with the correct GMPP part numbers before I had all the parts to reinstall it. I actually bought the last LB9/4L60 SLP chip left in GM dealer inventory in the entire country, and that was in 2001!
