Factory Shock color

I was just wondering what color the factory shocks and struts were. Did it very between suspension options?
Thanks

Re: Factory Shock color

Mine were white. However, I have an 83 z28, so who knows if the color changed as the generation got older.

Cheers!!!

Re: Factory Shock color

All of mine had black shocks and struts from the factory, so I'd think all thirdgens would've originally received black ones as the standard product.

Exceptions were(but might not be limited to): yellow Delco/Bilstein shocks(on IROC-Zs); and later, orange Delco/deCarbon shocks(though I'm not sure if these ever came on thirdgens).

Re: Factory Shock color

Mine are also black but i have a 91RS. The guy who installed my rear end also put on the stock shocks for an 87 Formula and they are also black.

Re: Factory Shock color

So if it was a IROC then it had the bilstein's for sure or was this an option tied to the suspension. How would I check to see if mine had them?

Black factory Delco struts and shocks on my '84 T/A.

IROCs came with factory installed Bilstein rear shocks. From what I've read the struts were still sourced from Delco but with "special" tuning. The three IROCs my friend has had seems to support this.

Normally it will say the company name on the shock. If there yellow thats a big indicator. Im not sure about on IROCS but my friends 84 vette has bilstein's and there yellow. You should also be able to run your RPOS and find out what suspension your car came with.

Both of my '86 IROC's still have the original yellow Bilstein rear shocks, and one of them still has the original front struts, which are black.

Re: Factory Shock color

Do you have any pics? I am always trying to collect factory documentation, info, or pics. Years from now when people start restoring their 3rd gens (Dont laugh it will happen) things like this will come in handy.
Thanks

I still have the originals on my 90' . . . Black AC Delco's.

I'm saving up for Bilstein's.

My '89 IrocZ's shocks and struts are still factory original and they are also exactly as 86blackiroc describes. Yellow in the back and black up front.
I can vouch for there originalilty as I knew the original owner. He never did any mods. And, I bought the car with only 27,000 miles on it.

My RPO's decode that besides the Z28 code (which all Iroc's had) but also the FE2 (Ride & Handling Suspension System) which was also likely part of every IrocZ/Z28 (I'd like to know if any differ). Part of the F-series RPO's dictates the type of suspension set-up. This is likely the code that related to the shocks and struts that are part of the IrocZ/Z28 package. Other FE# RPO's are for other types of handling like FE3 (Sport), FE1 (Soft), etc.

Sorry to beat this to death but was there any markings identifying them as Bilsteins? Any up close pics.

Mine were BLACK on my 89 Formula Vert BUT the WS6 came with GAS filled struts and shocks, I think the IROC came with Oil filled shocks and struts...

My 83 came from the factory with Black Struts/shocks. I was at the dealer when it was delivered so I am sure. I have never seen any stock white shocks.

My 90 IROC came with black on the front and the back. It also came with an RS emblem on the driver's side rocker. I bought the car new.

Yes, they have a stripe around the bottom of the shock, and it says Bilstein. You can see it in DJP's pic. It's partially visible just above the brake disc, half covered by (what's probably) brake dust.
