Re: Odd ball 83
Are you sure it's a TH350? Some of the 82 and 83 cars got the 200C trans, which is a 3 speed auto.

Re: Odd ball 83
And only with 5-spd std in '83.
So now what's the oddball part(s), the nose, the engine, the tranny ???
PS; How do you know it came with the L69 and that it wasn't put in later?
PS;PS; So far my guess is that it's an '83 Sport Coupe with a stock A3 auto tranny and 3.73 rear end. And then some previous owner pulled the little LQ9 4 banger out and dropped in an L69.

Re: Odd ball 83
...or it might be an LG4 that someone put a dual snorkel air cleaner on.
L69 cars did come with 3.73 gears, but posi wasn't available for it in 1983.
Also, like people have said, L69 cars in 1983 were only available with a 5-speed manual tranny.
So with a car that's as pieced-together as yours might be, the VIN is your best source for finding what the car came with originally. And the eighth digit of the VIN is the engine code. H=LG4, 7=L69(1983 only), G=L69('84-'86)

Re: Odd ball 83
Casting numbers are a dead giveaway but anyhow that car is gone I returned it due to the owner tryin to hose me, so instead I bought an 82 Z-28 with a built 350 and a Borg Warner Super T-10 Trans and a posi rear. but now I'm having issues with what color the Z-28 badges are supposed to be, the one on my dash is gold but the one thats left on ther back bumper is orange any ideas?

Re: Odd ball 83
Not always. Say take the block's casting numbers for example. It will tell you it's the 305, but not necessarily anything about the type of engine or intake. Both the '83 L69 (carbed) and LU5 (CFI) could have the same numbers.
Returning the car sounded like a good idea. Sometimes things just don't seem to add up.
Digging up some info regarding the badges. So far I've seen a couple Z28's with orange in and out. One that was just the opposite of yours. Etc. I need to verify what is truly the stock set-up.

Re: Odd ball 83
The 82-84 all had red/orange interior Z28 badges no matter what the color of the car interior or exterior. The external Z28 badges matched the color of the car. For example, my Blue, 83 Z28, with blue interior has a red/orange interior badge on the passenger side dash and a blue exterior one on the rear bumper and front rocker panels.

Re: Odd ball 83
My '82 Z28 was black with silver gfx, the interior was silver-grey, the exterior stripe was the black/charcoal/silver combo, and the exterior emblems were black/charcoal/silver.
My '83 Z28 was black with silver gfx, the interior was charcoal, the exterior stripe was the red/orange combo, and the exterior emblems were red/orange.
The dash emblems on both cars were red/orange.
So while the exterior emblems were coordinated with the color scheme of the car, the dash emblems were all red/orange in the early years, AFAIK. Yellow dash emblems came in later model years, but I don't know exactly when.
So if yellow is what you meant by saying "gold," then it's from a later model year. But if it's actually a metallic gold, then someone else will have to shed some light on that one.

Re: Odd ball 83
I've seen only the red/orange interior badge color for the '82-'84 Z28's.As LAFireboyd stated you may want to take a closer look at your interior badge. The yellow could appear gold as I've never seen a gold interior Z28 badge(not to say there never was).I would like to see a picture if possible.
My '83 Z28 is beige with gold GFX/wheels with the black/gold exterior stripes and gold exterior badges. The interior is camel/doeskin and the interior bade is the red/orange version with crossfire injection on the bottom.

Well then tomarrow I'll snap a few pics of my primer black Z (aka Stealth Bomber) and the gold colored Z-28 Badge, no crossfire though as this is a factory 4 speed manual and as far as I know all the cross fire cars were auto

Re: Odd ball 83
You're both right! . . .
- The '82 LU5 (the CFI) could be had with either the 4spd std or a 3spd auto.
- The '83 LU5 could only be had with the newer 700R4 4 spd auto.
Since, I believe, Bowtiebruiser bought an '82 Z28, he could have had a CFI & std tranny.
But I think he would be happier with the swapped in 350 and auto tranny that he has now, than a CFI and a std tranny. At least if I wasn't looking for stock, I would be.

Re: Odd ball 83
Iroctopless you are only partially correct about the CFI cars as far as trans goes.GM was working on the EPA certification for the '82 LU5/Super T-10 combo but it was never approved as far as I know.So hence there were no production stick cars just ones with the TH200C - again as far as I know. For '82 the eighth digit of the VIN would be a 7 = LU5 and a H = LG4(only V8/stick combo for '82).
But you are correct for '83 with the LU5/700R4 being the only combo. The eighth digit of the VIN for the LU5 was changed to S.The L69 VIN eight digit was 7 only for '83.
And yes I'd like to see some pictures of both your Z28 and the "gold" dash badge.

Re: Odd ball 83
Bingo! Good call. That would explain some of the conflicting data I was getting while trying to verify the trannies. Things get wacky when one source say yes there was a standard in '82 but fails to calify any particulars. Thanks for the great info.

Re: Odd ball 83
I'll say it. There were no gold Z28 dash badges...Ever. The closest thing was the 82 Indy 500 festival car (Pace) dash badge, which had some gold.

According to the option builds counts for '82, they made 14,031 Camaros (out of a total '82 production of 189,747) that rear with option RPO C25 (rear wiper & washer). Listed as a $117.00 option.

Re: Odd ball 83
The dash badge is very interesting. If it's 4-1/2" long it's a dash badge. If it's 6-1/2" it's a rocker emblem. It doesn't look like a faded yellow badge. Could someone have painted it? I've seen badges painted with very good results. A member has one in blue that looks terriffic.

well it is only 4 1/2" but I have no idea if someone painted it, it looks like it's been on there for quite some time
