1983 Z28 HELP? alittle advice please??? restro or restomod??

Ok so this weekend I am going to look at a 1983 Z28 T top rolling cassis. It was a 305 auto car. I want your opionion on some things. Should I paint back two tone like the orig.? I was kinda thinking metallic black for the whole car and maybe the top side of the louvers on the hood sliver. should I restore the car to stock or make a weekend warrior out of it? My orig. plan was metallic black, 383, 6 spd, full black interior with some racing style front seats and making it a low 11's street car. I don't see many 82-84 z28's around are they getting rare? Is there anyway to tell what it orig. came with or how do tell if its a real Z? etc. any opionions are welcomed. Im getting excited

If david068513 is talking about my car thats up for sale its a 84 Z28 HO 5-speed car. It has the RPO sticker on the box lid and it is a true 84 Z28. 82-84 Z28 are getting rare.

The 383 stroker is the way to go; more $ than a 350 but if you have the funds, well worth it.As far as a paint scheme is concerned (I know it wouldn't be year correct), how about all black, but with ghost silver metallic Heritage stripes.I think that would be schweet! But it's your ride- do what you want to do!!!

The crossfire was discontinued in 1984, so you could only get a carbed engine. In 82 and 83 not all Z28's were crossfire, that was an option. About the paint, unless you're going to pay real money for a high end paint job, it's best not to change colors. There's nothing more tacky than to open a door on a black car and see red door jams, or visa versa...Just my two cents.

Yes I understand that, If I paint the car a differ. color I would do it right and strip the car down before I paint it and paint every jam etc.
can you tell from the vin. which is crossfire and which is carb? etc. whats the Letter for a v8 in the vin in these years?

also what wheels did these cars come with? 15 or 16' and weren't they the single iroc wheels?

Re: 1983 Z28 HELP? alittle advice please??? restro or restomod??

also on 83's I read that they came standard with the clock in the concole but it was deleted if you got a radio with a clock? so does that mean a 83 without a clock in the concole would be more "rare" then one with it or the other way around???

Im so confused. im a late model(88-92) Guy but I feel in love with the 82-84 front end.

The clocks to the best of my knowledge were an option not standard. Yes, in 84 if you got a digital clock the analog clock was deleted unless you still wanted it, in which case you ordered it as an option and could still get it. The word "Rare" and Third Gens don't really mix. You can use words like infrequent, uncommon, few and far between, but not rare....

Re: 1983 Z28 HELP? alittle advice please??? restro or restomod??

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I am having a real hard time finding a 1982-84 Z-28 front bumper cover. I checked online with Unlimited, and many other dealers. I called my local dealer also looking for one. I was curious if anyone knew of a good place to get a new cover.
I could get a used one but they seem to need some body work.

Kevin82Z28 you're partially correct on the LU5 Vin designator. In '82 the LU5 used a "7" but this was changed to a "S" for '83. The L69 oddly enough received the "7" for '83 then this was changed to "G" for '84. The LG4 used "H" for all years ('82-'87) it was used in the F-Body.

The only definite way to indicate a genuine '83 Z28 is having a VIN eight digit "S" for and auto car or "7" for a manual car. I say this because the LG4 ("H") was available in all models.

David yes twin TBI is referring to the Crossfire setup. It does work well if you have the patience to give it a chance. Better exhaust and intake mods definitly wake them up.

The console clock (RPO-U35) was standard on the Z28 '82-'85 but was deleted if a integral clock/radio was ordered. It could still be ordered separatly as my '83 was. They are neat looking but troublesome -especially the second hands.

The closest thing to a SPID the '82-'83 cars have is the trim tag on the center top of the radiator support. It gives paint code/type,interior code/type/color,seat type,CC1 for factory T-Top cars along with other trim codes. If you're lucky you'll find a build sheet somewhere in the car (in or under seats, under carpet or behind door/trim panels) or not at all.

The '82-'84 Z28 ,even the SC and Berlinetta, are a less common sight because a lot of people convert the nose/tail/GFX to the '85 up versions. Personally I prefer the look of my '83 Z28 over the later cars. The hood on the '83 Z28 can either be steel or composite. And if a Crossfire car that composite hood has functional intake louvers.

My '83 is an original (and still) LU5 car and has every option except the rear wiper,L/S seats and Camaro letter interior. Oddly she had mounting posts for the upper console when i got her. The holes for these are stamped into the metal and not drilled so it has me thinking the upper console may have been a late '83 release like the L69. My car was built the 3rd week of June '83 so she would have been in the last run of '83 I believe.

Hope this helps.

Only place you're going to find a 82-84 front is in a parts yard. When I bought mine in 2006 from "The Paddock," they said it was their last one. Haven't heard of any since being reproduced. You will find them infrequently in a parts yard.

I find most JY take the wheels off and forklift the cars and damage the GFX and bumper covers and damage FBC winching or towing them.

This site, Ebay etc. you can find most of the parts you need.

Shipping of a bumper cover is expensive and most people have troubles paying around $100 for shipping.

Hope this helps.
wow thanks for all the info. that helped alot. idk why everyone converts them. the 85-92 nose is nice (I own a 92 z28) but the 82-84 is unqiue and has a more classic muscle car feel. were the 85-92 is more sports car to me.

Brennan, you should get the 84 Z28 hood decals for your scoops. They would look good. www.phoenixgraphics.com very inexpensive.
