Re: 1987 Camaro V6 LT or Not?

He's asking how did the insurance co know that his car is an LT. Instead of for example a RS or a IROC-Z.

I don't really know but I bet they are able to get the actual build information from the VIN or cross reference it with GM's data base or something....
Maybe they get the RPO codes just by typing in the VIN

I do know that my insurer knew I had an IROC as soon as the info was sent to them

To make sure the SPID decal is or isn't the correct one for the car, double check the VIN number on it. If it matches the VIN on the car, you're still in luck. Then look for the RPO B4E. The LT wasn't really a seperate model, but an option on the Sport Coupe.

thanks for any help!
Since the only 87 model with a 6cyl was a LT. there is no hope it is going to be a Z28 or IROC-Z

Re: 1987 Camaro V6 LT or Not?

Thanks for the info! I'm gona call my friend at GM parts tomorrow and give her the VIN and see what she can find out! So, its a good chance that my model would still be an LT? Even thow i dont have any LT decals anywhere? Where would i find that RPO code? My arm rest isnt original from the car...would it be on the driver or passenger door? Thanks for the help again!

This is what helped me determine whether the car I just bought was an LT. (Which it is) What type of steering wheel does it have? Does it have a Deluxe Interior? Carpeted plastic Panels? Check for ''B4E'' .

Well, my i cant trust the info on the inside of my armrest cause its not the original...i have plastic paneling and my steering wheel isnt round...its the square kind... I just checked my "lockable" storage area in the back panel, and no stickers...i guess i will have to check what the VIN# has to say!

Re: 1987 Camaro V6 LT or Not?

To be honest without the SPID sheet, Dealer invoice or Build Sheet it would be impossible to tell. Technically the Z28 was an option package on the SC, as was the LT for that matter. The Z28 only came with a V8 so it rules out that possiblity. The LT & SC both came with the V6 so its either one of those...

Your best bet would to be either try & get the info from a dealer or go to GM and get your Dealer Invoice which would have the information your looking for... BTW, $50 from GM to get your invoice...

Good luck hunting.

If there is no evidence of an LT badge then chances are its an SC...

Re: 1987 Camaro V6 LT or Not?

Chris, two Camaros back I had a 1987 LT in Ontario (2.8v6 w a 5 spd, T roof, no air, all other options). The pad on the steering wheel had Camaro LT on it as did the side exterior pillars, the options included the fold down rear hatch cover and the Factory Rims on the LT were 14 inch. I currently have a 1987 SC, and the rims are factory 15 inch. Not sure if this helps, or if I'm even right, but the suspension was to have given a softer ride than the base Camaro, so maybe there is something there you can check?? (I've had 12 Camaros/Firebirds, the 1987 LT was my favorate!)
