If you take the car (or just the VIN) with proof of ownership, they should be able to determine your lock number and provide a new key.

I wish that were true, but in this case, according to my local dealer, it's not. I'm doing this same thing. And if the car was a '91 or newer, then, yes, a dealer can retreive the key information. But for cars older than that, like vargasjc's '89(and my '89), a dealer can no longer get that info.

All a dealer can do is order a new set of door locks(not sure about a trunk lock, tho), which aren't cheap. And all will come as "blanks," meaning you'll have to spend even more time and money having all the locks keyed to match and the keys cut.

You can get new, replacement door locksets from Summit(or any auto parts store) that will look like the stock products, and they're very reasonably priced. But here, again, I'm not sure about a trunk lock.

Or you can search for a matched-set of used thirdgen 'bird locksets w/key(s), then restore(repaint) the locks so they look like new, get new keys cut from the set's original, then get the little black GM key caps to put on the keys. That's what I did.

I contacted Tom at House of Camaro, www.houseofcamaro.com , here in the LA area, and he had some complete, used, keyed sets, consisting of the door locks, the trunk lock('birds are different than 'maros), and the rear storage compartment lock. He had more than one set, so he might still have some left. Contact him.

You can find new complete lock sets on Ebay and from Year One.

One thing you HAVE to be careful of, though, is that this is one model-specific part. Camaros didn't have the bolt-on trunk lock like the Trans Am/Firebird does. Camaros clipped in (?). Advance Auto carries the Trunk Lock cylinder with rods. Picked it up for cheap, as well as a set of door lock cylinders. I have two different sets of keys (which I intend to fix) but at least I can lock the car and open the trunk now... Like you, my TA has no interior trunk release, so I couldn't get it open until two weeks ago when I had them replaced. What a PITA!

Re: trunk and door lock set replacement!!! HELP

I bought my car from a guy that didn't have keys for it as well and its a 1985 z28. I had a key to start it and that was it. I called Speedy keys and they came out to my car at my house and make a new set of keys for the doors and the trunk on the spot for like 75 bucks!!!... I don't know if you have a speedy key guy in your area but there are people that will do that!...
