The torque arm. It connects to the back end of the transmission and keeps the rear axle level since there are only lower control arms. You're going to need one if its missing. Its a major part of the rear suspension.

Any 3rd-gen will have it but there are two different types. Base and lower end suspension levels used a solid torque arm while the WS6 and other high level suspensions had lightening holes in them.

I really hope you haven't been driving your car like that, with the torque arm missing...

Very interesting. I was aware that there were differences in how the "lips" faced, but not that there were two different OE torque arms. Any chance of a pic?

I can get you some pics but its going to be a couple months before I can take them. My '82 and good '84 T/A are both level III WS6 cars and have the torque arm with the holes in them. My '84 T/A parts car has the standard level II Y99 suspension and has a solid torque arm. I think as time progressed and lower lever suspensions were upgraded to the previous model years higher level suspension eventually all 3rd-gens got the torque arm with the lightening holes.

Not true... My 1992 Firebird V6 automatic has a solid torque arm. I've seen the ones with the holes in them (my 1984 15th anniversary TAs) and the one on the 1992 V6 isn't the same.
