How much does a thirdgen Firehawk go for these days?

 

ebay around $35000 seems to be where it stops... In private trades as much as $50,000 to $75,000 depending on which one. BTW you cannot count the convertible because I do not think it has ever sold... he was asking north of $100,000 for it...

 

Anybody know how much the one on Long Island sold for last year?

I do think the vert has changed hands.....

 

He never told me & never quoted me a price. Was a bit of a recluse if you ask me, would send one picture at a time, weeks apart and kept asking for me to make him an offer. The couple of times I tried to schedule to go see it & talk to him in person he went mute. I finally got an e-mail back & he said it had been sold.

 

Bummer, its to fuzzy to read the map pocket too.

Never thought of it that way. #2 has a different intake manifold?

 

Actually there was more than one intake manifold, they changed little things here and there on more than one one it seems like.

Tony has a ton of information on the Firehawks, and some of the nuances of changes.

When I looked at #26 in 1999 at SLP, it did not even have a T-ram, it had a something that looked a lot like a Miniram sitting on top, It has since gone back to a T-ram... They were always trying to get a little more out of these cars...

 

Here is #2's intake...

The only special thing I see is the cold air tubes are sheet metal instead of ABS

 

I know in 2009 at the Trans Am Nationals there was a 91 or 92 Firehawk that had a different plenum... it was still a T-ram but on top it was opened up and re-welded... I don't have pictures, but if anyone was there, they might have one of the actual T-ram itself...

Looks like you took the pics of #13 when I had it in springfield, I'll add them to my collection nice

 

It also has the red plug wires (instead of blue) and the adj brake bias valve.


#008 is the one that has the cut and raised throttle body mount. Guessing It was to try and help internal airflow.

 

#26 did get a miniram. Something about not being able to tune the t-ram properly.

fyi- # 2 was indeed something special. I knew the guy who owned it. Sold it several years ago. I had pics of it long time ago but unfortunately lost it because my old computer hard drive crashed. The cold air intake was indeed hand made with the dual intake set up. It did have the brake bias adjusting valve. The rear seats was deleted and also had roll cage installed with (i believe) recaro racing seats and 5 point safety harness. Battery was in the truck. I always wanted to ride it but never got the chance

 

The 1st (atleast) 6 cars possible had the dual aluminum air intakes. I know 006 has a metal one. Its the farthest up I've seen with a metal one but the cars were built out of order VIN vs build number.
All the cars had the batteries in the trunk because of the dual cold air kits

I would have to say there is no way any of the Factory thirdgens were competing in any performance category against the Firehawks. They were just too modified. Nothing GM had in the parts bin would allow the factory thirdgens to compete in handling, braking, and the like.

The TTA is probably the closest, but the Firehawk would edge it out. They are likely close, as even though the Firehawk was 350hp, and the TTA "250hp", they probably closer to 300hp. But the Firehawk was heavier.

However the Firehawk still had larger advantages in terms of suspension, and braking performance.

The Firehawk in $50,000 of 1991's money would cost about $87,000. The closest modern day representation of the 91-92 Firehawks is the current 5th gen Camaro Z28. Both have very much the same design goals. Un-compromised performance

 

First I think I should clarify, technically IIRC all of the 1992's were 25th anniversary cars. What I meant and should have said was the Heritage Edition.

Although I will agree that GM had nothing in their parts bin, I would think that they could pull something off... All they would have needed is find a performance supplier to make a combination of parts for a factory special car. Cam, Heads, Pistons, maybe an intake... It would not have been a stretch. The LT1 was pretty potent back in the day, I imagine between the lackluster sales of the Firehawk, and the fact that if they did do anything special they would have had to done all sorts of testing, just because of the Government.

I still think they should have used the 4.3 Turbo designed around 1983 and put it in a Z28 they would have had one heck of a car.

Also I am not sure what they changed on the Suspension of a Firehawk...

Only thing changed on any of them (that I have seen) was the front springs on the aluminum engine cars. They used a spring from a certain TA w a V6 Other than that, 100% stock WS6 Formula suspension.

 

They put it in a custom batt box on the driver side, where the locking compartment is. (they removed the cardboard compartment for the room)

 

about the question on the suspension on the firehawks...what i was able to observe on a couple of them. They looked practically stock! If anything they may have changed the spring rates for the front and/or rear. But that i'm not sure of. I couldn't determine if the ride height was anywhere different from the stock birds if that. Unfortunately, those 17" Ronal wheels throws it off a bit, visually.

I do recall seeing the rear lower control arms being stock productions pieces, as is the torque arm as well, attaching to that dana 44 rear end. Other observations: I didn't see any "wonder bar" being mounted on the front, nor did i see any subframe connectors or even a strut tower brace...

With the power and torque of these cars, you would think it would be necessary to upgrade the suspension as well. But then again i'm sure that would up the price (even more) on an already costly vehicle.

It reminds of my uncle's GMMG Blackbird. When i had that car on the lift and doing the brakes...looking at the suspension, it was practically bone stock! I mean a car with a stage 2A LS engine making 475 HP and over 500lbs of torque...why on earth would you keep the stock suspension! If your going to build a beast, go all out!!!

I thought all 25th anniversary cars were Heritage Editions. What are the differences?

 

#3 is the one that got all the goodies isn't it? That's the one that to date has the highest selling price too - am I correct?

I have heard the TA vert has changed hands but could be wrong. Probably the highest money.

BTW, #003 had the plastic DCAI, not the fabbed metal like #002. It also had a crack in the plastic on the passenger side.

 

Actually, #3 is in Canada unless it's changed hands again. And it was a little closer to six figures. That was way back when $50k for a Hawk was stupid money.

The vert also traded hands. I offered six figures for the vert and was turned down....

a car worth holding on to. i wonder if the guys ordering these cars in 1991 and 1992 knew these cars were as special as they are today?

sure the cars a huge step up from normal Firebirds, but did these guys go "Damn i just bought a piece of American history right here" Lets face it these cars were modified street cars and factory backed. its one thing to buy a new car and soup it up and completely different to buy a car GM gave the authority to be souped up before you buy it. id love to drive one one day.

 

For what they paid for them new - I'm sure they did.
