Factory suspension component color

If doing a full restore, what color would your suspension components be. I know the rear pieces for sure were black, but What color is the stock k-member. While giving mine a once over with a hose along time ago i noticd it was bare metal..did the black paint peel off or did it come bare metal. What would be the correct thing to restore that back to original?

Thank You
Marcus

Re: Factory suspension component color

If you find out let me know. These cars are known for having some bare metal components (like the rear end), and even the suspension parts that were painted were not painted very well.

My car, with only 8K miles, appears to have traces of paint on the K-member, but it could be my imagination. It's mostly rust. Even the lower A-arms are rusty, even though the car has only been driven in the rain a half-dozen times since new, and the floors are clean enough to eat off of.

1970 Judge,
Actually you are close to being correct. The rear components were originally a semi-gloss Black. The thing that most people miss is there was some colored paint on the ends, I suspect to indicate that the bolts were tightened. The ends of the track bar were a LIGHT BLUE, there should be a GREEN spot on the torque arm in the middle. That dot was actually put there after the drive shaft was installed as there was a stripe of green paint from the marker. At the rear end, there was GOLD where the drive shaft bolts to the rear end.

The Sway Bar was painted black, I did not see any evidence of any other colors.

It ultimately depends on how detailed you get.

Also it should be noted that the Borg & Warner (9 Bolt)rear axle was painted Black, and the Saginaw (10 Bolt) axle was not painted at all.

The Front suspension pieces were barely painted, The front sway bar was painted Black. The K member I think was bare steel.

Re: Factory suspension component color

Thank you for the replies! After a little internet surfing, i came across a very low mile (16k) or something that was for sale. With that low of miles, the k-member and a-arms still had sruface rust which would lead me to believe those pieces were in fact bare metal. Now the painted pieces and pen markings, is there anyway I could find out exactly where they went?

here is a link

There are pictures and everything showing where the paints go... I actually went to a local hobby shop to get testers paint markers, the colors were almost spot on... no pun intended.

This makes perfect sense, based on my low-mile car. The only things that appear to have a good, durable, solid coat of black paint are the sway bar and the coil springs. It may be factory correct, but things sure look unappealing under there!
