Can anyone identify this component from my T5?

This piece was attached to the transmission on my '87 Firebird, which was converter from auto to standard by a previous owner. I have the transmission out for other repairs. This part was a pain to get off and it will be much easier putting the trans back if I don't reinstall it. Does anyone know what this component does?

It mounts to the tail section and extends behind the trans and beneath the driveshaft. It's very heavy, I thought maybe it's a counter weight or something like that. I don't know where the trans originally came from, so I don't know if this is something specific to the car or specific to the trans and unnecessary for the car.

Pretty sure its just to absorb harmonics. Many have removed them with no ill effects.

Yup, just some dead weight, to damp vibrations.
