92 ASC L98 WS6 GTA Vert??
How do you tell if you have a real GTA? What I have is supposedly a 1992 ASC GTA L98 WS6 triple black convertible with 59k original miles. If this car is all real does anyone know or know how many were built? It has the GTA badges, ASC sticker on lower drivers door, 5.7 on the tag. Rearend code is Gu2, but I thought all the GTA's had lower gears. I've had a couple camaro's and Iroc's but this is my first GTA so I need help decoding this car. I bought this car from a guy that did'nt know much about it either. The engine is obviously not stock, it has headers, BBK TB, Alum angle plug heads and an obviously bigger cam. This is all I really know about it.

I don't believe the car is original. According to Frankie's webpage:
http://www.gtasourcepage.com/newauthentication.html
In addition, in 1992, you could not get the 350 in a Trans Am convertible (what this vehicle likely is).
Also, what do you mean by "5.7 on the tag"? Which tag is that? The ASC sticker does not have that information on it, should have a date of when the vehicle was modified by ASC.
I do recall a triple black 1992 convertible T/A being listed for on eBay within the past month or so, which had similar modifications to the engine that you describe. The seller also mentioned it was a 350, though the VIN indicated it was originally a 305 car. I don't recall it being listed as a GTA, though. However, the vehicle you describe is not original.
Can you provide the first digits of the VIN? The 8th character should be an "8" if it's a 350, though I suspect you will find an "F" for 305.

Second - There is no such thing as a FACTORY 1991 or 1992 Trans Am GTA Convertible.* I have the factory Pontiac Firebird order sheets for 1987-1992, including the 1991-92 convertibles, and they clearly state "Convertible - Available Firebird, N/A Formula, Available Trans Am, N/A GTA". For anyone who disagrees, I will be happy to send copies of these forms for your verification.

Re: 92 ASC L98 WS6 GTA Vert??
Thanks for the help. The 5.7 tag I was referring to is the emissions tag on the radiator support.
Now can you tell me what ASC did to these cars? My car was built in Apr. 92 and has Apr. 1992 on the ASC sticker.
And if the only way to really tell if you have a GTA is the Y84 option code why are these cars so special? Thanks.

Well the emissions tag should be on the inside of the hood, not on the radiator support. Do you have any pics? What are the first numbers of the VIN? 1G2FWxxx
How about pics of the SPID sheet?
Re: 92 ASC L98 WS6 GTA Vert??
There's more knowledgeable people on ASC, but ASC was the company that took T-Tops car and converted them into convertibles. That's all I can really say without discussing structural reinforcements and fabrication that ASC performed with such a conversion.
Yes, Y84 is the best way to know if the car is an authentic GTA.
As Mark said, the VIN should start out 1G2FW3 (6th digit being a 3 is a Convertible for the 1991/1992). The 8th digit will either be an F (305) or 8 (350).
As I said, I suspect you will find that you originally had a 305 equipped Trans AM, and not a 350 GTA as the vehicle you describe was not supposed to be available and thus is likely not original.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to get some pics up as soon as I can.
BTW the 8th # is an F for 305, but doesnt matter anyways as someone has changed the original engine.

#1.....Y84 is the ONLY way to verify GTA or not. There is absolutely NO other way to verify it authenticity.
#2.......As for 350 in a vert....I don't think there would have been nothing preventing a buyer from sending a brand new coupe/t-top car to ASC to be converted.

Re: 92 ASC L98 WS6 GTA Vert??
AFAIK, thru 1987 for Camaros and thru 1989 for Firebirds thre were very few if any owner converted cars that were sent to ASC. They were all sent to ASC when they were new. I would believe that this would be so that there was no structural integrity issues when the conversion was done. After 1989 ALL ASC Convertibles were for GM... All Speculation aside, There is nothing to suggest otherwise.
