Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Im new to these boards, im 20 and ive got a 1985 Z28 Camaro with the IrocZ package. This car was given to me years ago by my parents who bought it off one of A.J. Foyt's dealership showroom floors in mid 84 i believe. The car currently has about 240k(twice flipd) but the engine in it now is the origonal engine which has only been in since the second flip.

I wasnt sure where to post so i picked this thread, heres my questions.

About a year ago i was hit by a car on a motorcycle and im going to use part of my settlement to fix this back up so i can stay off a bike and alive. The cars been on and off the road for the last 25 years, had a new 700r4 put in about 3 ago, and put new rear drivetrain abotu 7-10 ago. everything else is pretty much stock. .

I want to know how much trouble a engine swap would be with the computer and whatnot, or if it would be worth it at all to put a new engine in without replacing the old drivetrain and all. . . The stock 305 TPI still runs good and hard, which the throaty exhause that made the car famous, so im just debating if its worth it to do anything at all to it if im not gonna drop at least 10k on bringing everything up to date.

Ive attached pictures and welcome ANY advice or help as in if any1 has extra time to help me go over my options.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

It looks like its in decent shape and has some real potential. You can drop a 350 block in place of that 305 block and still keep your TPI and computer and stuff you'd just have to change injectors and tune the computer.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Check out the post at the top of this history forum about the conteur interiors. That interior is getting harder to come by. At first i thought yours was brown until i saw the back seats lol. Looks like those 240k were not kind to your front seats. I would recommend keeping them and getting them redone or cleaned but thats just me.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

no thats not true those wheels where an option on the early irocs. it looks like it could be pulled around pretty easily. first i would put a cover over the distributor than blast the engine bay. then i would try cleaning the interior to see if it pulls around.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

You both might be right, i have most the origonal paperwork but i havent checked it might of been a z28 on the showroom and they sent it back to get the iroc package afterwards but im not sure. . . i know for a fact that most all in the car now except the engine and exhaust and interior are not stock at all it had a pretty beefy 350 gm preformance arround the time of my conception and childhood lol

But as far as the other dude goes, with the 355 smallstall, if i were to redo the drivetrain and since going with a new torque convereter how hard would it be to throw a turbo in there if i had the money?

almost forgot im in central florida between tampa/orlando.

Thanks for the replys as i said any help is much appreciated. . i have basic knowledge but ima computer guy and audio guy. . . i have gearhead friends that are always arround but i wanna get outside advice too yanno?

i can assure you with utmost certainty that 15 inch wheels were not available on a 1985 camaro with the iroc package. i know i bought mine in 85. i have the showroom brochure but no scanner to display it. you can believe me.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Grumpy is right. Those are not the correct rims for an IROC-Z in 1985. No, they were not n option! All 1985-87 IROC-Zs had 16" rims. It wasn't until 1988 that the 15" rim was standard and the IROC-Z rims were an option. The above pictured rims were never an "option", but were standard on 1988-90 IROC-Zs. I would bet the car is a Z28 that had the ground effects painted.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Check the console for B4Z, which is the RPO for the IROC package. You might verify how the car was born. Oh, check the door placard for 16" wheels (IROC). If the placard indicates 15" wheels....

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

correct check up on the RPO codes... they will tell the story... well turbos can be added, its a matter or how much fabrication for lack of budget or if theres not one, it can be done.. ive seen STS rear turbo kits altered to fit a third gen, also ebay sells budget turbo kits cheap, but the manifolds and some of the pipes are the only decent pieces. the turbos and wastegates are crappy... i think a centrifigal supercharger will be more effective and there are kits available

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Lol Yall dont listen, the car was a showroom car that my dad PAID for them to add all the other packages specifically to that car . . I have all the paperwork EVEN the credit card they gave my mom with the delivery date for when the IROC package was added. . . So ya those rims DID in fact come on that car if YOU wanted them to . . . BUT I DONT CARE ABOUT ANY OF THAT hahaha. I dont care about what it was i wanted advice on what i will make it to be jeez.

All the other advice is well noted and appreciated as usual.

I cleaned the engine too and it looks alot better.

And BY THE WAY in case yall didnt realize, THERE WERE NO IROCS FROM 85-87 The IROC was not a separate Camaro model; rather, it was an option available with Z28 models.

So dont post if you dont have any advice to give, go be bitter somewhere else, i wanted help rebuilding a car thats been part of my life since conception not to argue about some crap that didnt matter 25 years ago and certinly dont matter now.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

Having an attitude won't get you much help. People stated that it wasn't originally an IROC-Z because you stated that it had the IROC-Z package. I guess my question would be what is the IROC-Z package if it didn't include the stripes and rims?

And BTW, there was an IROC-Z from 1985-1987. Nobody said anything about it being a seperate model. Just because it was an option package doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's why the IROC-Z package has it's own RPO of B4Z. If you want to get technical, there was no IROC-Z from 1988-1990! The RPO code was Z28 not B4Z. So technically speaking, the IROC-Z was only available from 1985-1987 and from 1988-1990 was just an appearance for the Z28.

My words exactly, im not giving attitude these people just need to bite their tongues if they dont know how to read. . . The topic was NOT "I have a origonal iroc i want everyone to tell me its not even tho THEY DONT EVEN KNOW THE VIN. . . the topic was I WANT SOME ADVICE or help from some camaro guys to love camaros. . .

Yet again people i want some advice from knowledgable people not to debate what you all think MY car is.

so PLEASE, im asking please, i dont care what you all think my car is, but if you have some advice about the easiest/cheapest way to make it better im all ears, otherwise go look at another post please.

In case yall were wondering too, The car was arround $20,000 new (compared to arround 12k for a stock z28 i believe. Completely custom from the factory, and were the origonal owners. I think i know more about my car than yall no offense, considering i still have the origonal paperwork for it. . . Your right tho it WASNT AT ALL a stock camaro and you couldnt just go buy it from the dealership, so ya your right those rims probably didnt come on a "stock" iroc i guess even, which is ok because mine was never stock . . . at all. . .

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

For a newbie, you show a lot of attitude very quickly. I sugest you use some manners if you want help from the members on TGO. **** them off & ypu'll be ignored & get nowhere asking things.

Scan or take a pic of the SPID sheet, scan or take a pic of the window. Something all the RPO codes. Block out the last numbers of the VIN, just not the letters & numbers in the beginning showing everything. Prove all thew knowledgable here on TGO that you are right & they are wrong.

My guess is, you'll have an excuse as to why you can provide scans or pics to prove everyone wrong.

Lots of places scan things for a small fee (wouldn't it be worth the $ to prove everyong wrong?) & most everyone has at least one friend has a digital camera (so the no camera excuse won't work) or has a cell phone (or friends that does) who can take the pics for them.

Lets see some RPO codes & the first part of the VIN (only the last 6 #s identify it as YOUR car. if your the type or is scared that others might try to "steal" your car with the VIN, just don't post the last 6 #s)

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

, I'm getting a headache.

Anyway, there is a good question about an engine swap in the original post. Since that topic isn't really dealt with under History / Restoration, I suggest (if you haven't already) posting it in the Engine Swap section of our forum. We'd be happy to help you out and make your ride exactly what you want it to be. It's good to hear that after 24 years, your Camaro has been in the same family. Most get sold so many times by now that it's almost impossible to know the history of the car. And a little sentimental value doesn't hurt either.
Good luck.

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

The last reply is a valid point, i suppose ill have to make a post in each section dealing with rebuilding, might i suggest a Total reubild or something as such for people like me who want to do more rather than making 4 or 5 different posts in various places.. . .

Re: Second gen kid, third gen restoration.

That's not bad idea for those with the questions, but it makes it harder for those with the answers. For example, a lot of members may know little about exhaust systems but tons about suspensions. Many with the most knowledge will be focusing on the topics they know the best. A somewhat general category may not yield the best result. Also members who use the search feature will get better and faster results if they can look in specific topics.
Running a forum without real clearly defined topics, tends to get difficult to manage and keep under control. This may take posting questions a little more time consuming but the results would be worth it.

This goes for EVERYONE, answer the guys question, do not get off topic with crap about whether or not he has an IROC... The original thread has nothing to do with that, it has to do with:

It is just a bunch of BS to be reading a thread that has nothing to do with the topic, or the original question.
