what engine do i have???

i recently purchased a 305 tpi from a guy in maryland. a friend of mine heard the engine run before it was pulled. it was said to have been in a 86 GTA and had digital guages but car was totalled and then went into a camaro. it was totalled soon after being new? motor has 50-60k on it. I did a lil reasearch on that and i believe and correct me if i am wrong but i believe at worst case its an 87 engine? i pulled the trans from it today and got all the number i could find on the block and the heads. i am hoping someone who reads this thread will be able to check into what this is

Mortec.com says it's a 87-94 305. Check the head numbers. Pull the valve cover and there will be a casting number. That'll tell you if it's a LG4, LB9, or L03.

And just to add, there wasn't a production 1986 GTA as the first production year for the GTA was 1987. There was the Trans AM, which could be equipped with the digital dash in 1986.

86 Engines had perimeter bolt valve covers, a flat tappet cam, and a 1 pc rear main seal. It's more likely the donor car wasn't an 86.

Hello 1990s10!!

Your engine "block" comes from a 1987 Camaro bulit at the Norwood Ohio plant!! Probably sometime around mid to late March 1987, engine build date usually preceeds car build date by about 15-30 days!!!!

V = Flint Engine
02 = Month of Manufacture
26 = Date of the Month of Manufacture
SFW = 305 with auto transmission

2HN230574 This number doesn't work, 1HN230574 does, and will verify my info above!!

2HN230574 would break down as follows:

2 = Pontiac
H = 1987
N = Norwood Ohio
230574 last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN #

However, all the decoders that I used don't like the first #2, but change it to a 1, and they all come up with this:

1 = Chevrolet
H = 1987
N = Norwood Ohio
230574 = Last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN #

P.S. It's possible that the decoder that I used was biased towards Chevrolet!! LOL!! Just substitute Pontiac for Chevrolet, and Firebird for Camaro!! The engine suffix code is what you really need, and SFW is a 1987 305 with auto transmission!!
