RPO code questions..

I just decoded my RPO glove box..I have some questions. The car is a 1987 iroc z 305 tpi 5 speed. Its black.I have a code..86A..which is stripe color, accent, two tone red/gunmetal(91)..what is that? stripe around car? I didn't think red/gray stripe was available in 87..The car has some cool things done to it..FE2,GM3,G80,G92,J65,KC4,LB9,MM5,M39,UQ4 to name some.I can't wait to put it back to former glory, will look sharp.

Hello matt1970pon!!

I hate to burst your bubble, but 86A is not red/gunmetal on a 1987 IROC, I have 86A on my 1987 IROC, and it's Lt Silver/Black!! 84A on a 1987 IROC is red/gumetal!!

Verified with F Body 82-89 GM parts manual!!

One thing that intrigues me is that, you have the same FE2, GM3, G80, J65, KC4, LB9, MM5, M39 as I do, but I don't have G92????

Strange!!

HUm..ok the RPO code decoder I downloaded from this website is wrong then...it lists 86A as red/gunmetal..Thats weird about yours not having the g92 option..its like yours had everything but the 3:45 ratio...why order the other stuff then stop there?

Hello matt1970pon!!

RPO codes do change their meaning sometimes, and the "up to date" code 86A today could mean red/gunmetal, but when the code was used in 82-89 (based on my parts manual) it was Lt Silver/Black which matches my car!!

As for the G92, it's funny because, GM3 denotes the 3:45 axle ratio, not G92, G92 was just a marketing RPO that told you/GM that you had the performance axle ratio!! I had the 3:45 axle but, long story made short, I didn't get it when I bought my car in 1988, someone else got that part!!

P.S. I just checked out another site's decoder, and get this: 86A Stripe Color Accent, Two Tone, for a 1993 is Raspberry/Black, and for 1991 is Red/Gunmetal, yet they both have 86A!! Proves my point about the change up, so your 1987 IROC 86A is Lt Silver/Black like mine!!

No. It's right, you're just not reading it right. Back when the RPO list was created, one source was a 1991 shop manual. In 1991 86A meant red/gunmetal. That's why it has "(91)" in the definition, to clarify it's year specific. Anytime you see that "(91)" in the definition, if your car isn't a 91, it's probably not correct for your car.

Re: RPO code questions..

Drew, thanks. I was thinking that.So I guess just use my common sense then when it comes to color? I put the silver/black strip on it..I guess that would be correct.

Re: RPO code questions..

Just create a thread on this forum and someone will decode them for you, or do a search for the codes you can't find definitions for.

For an 87 Iroc, I'd match the stripe color to the wheel color. Silver wheels/gray stripe, Gold wheels/gold stripe.
