1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
What colors were the hood bird option available on? Does anyone know how many were made? Could you get a 350 in a TA In 87 or only GTA? Also anyone know how many blue with sliver GFX trans am with the hood bird with a 305 tpi and 5 speed were made?
Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
The 5.7 was available in the Trans AM as well as Formula. The GTA was the only Firebird where the 5.7 was standard. It was optional on the Trans Am and Formula. However, it does not appear common to find a Trans Am with the 5.7L. I'd be curious to see production % for the US market.
GM did not keep track of options to the level that you're asking. There is no known public source that has that degree of information that your asking. A 3rd party site, such as Compnine, can provide some types of those answers through the power of MySQL and PHP. However, Compnine does not have US market VINs until ~1990 model year and newer.

Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
The hood bird should have been available with any color. I have a blue/silver '86 with a TPI 305, but with an automatic. A 5 speed 305 TPI was not available until '87.
As JT said, there is no way to get as specific as what you are looking for. I think that at one point, Pontiac Historical Services MIGHT have been able to get a little more specific (for instance, telling you how many blue '86 TAs there were may have been possible), but I've been told by people on here that PHS does not have the access to info he used to have. My dad's packet that was ordered years ago for his '02 Formula broke his car down as far as a 1 of 34 Sunset Orange Formula for '02. My packet simply tells me I have 1 of 46,000 Trans Ams

So 87 would be the only year to get what I want. I wish we could break this down more from GM. I wonder how many got the 350. I have never seen a 350 trans am non GTA car.

Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
There were more IROC's & Z28's made than any other model with the L98,
However the GTA by ratio is by far the most common to have the 350, for all F-bodies, even IROC's. The reason is the GTA was standard with the 350, and the LB9/M5 was a credit option, as was the LB9/A4 for some years. Ultimately there are a few Trans Am (NON-GTA)'s with the 350... I believe it was in part due to the fact that if you wanted the 350, why not go all the way and get the whole shebang.
The second most common among the Firebirds was the Formula. and finally the Trans Am and IROC. Keep in mind I am talking Ratios, for every 100 GTA's made .
For example in 1990 (since it is the only year that I have access to)
2/3rds GTA's had the L98
1/2 Z28's had the L98
1/5th Formulas had the L98
1/20 Trans Am had the L98

Steering wheel controls was a GTA only item. Introduced in 1988, with 1989 being the last year, it was standard on the 1988 & 1989 GTA. With the introduction of the factory CD player in 1989, not all GTAs would have the steering wheel control if the factory CD player was ordered as it wasn't compatible.
Digital cluster was an option on the Trans AM but not the Formula.

Frankie has US production figures for the 1988-1992 GTA. His 1987 data contains both Trans AM and GTA:
http://www.gtasourcepage.com/RPOFiguresMain
In 1988 5,102 of 9,765 GTAs had the digital cluster option so you can see it was quite popular with having slightly the majority of 1988 GTA production.

Ok, I see only 500 something 350 cars were made. It lists colors at the bottom are those GtA only colors or were the trans am only available in these colors as well? I want to know if they made a blue with sliver GFX in 1990.
Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
The link I provided you (http://www.gtasourcepage.com/RPOFiguresMain) outlined production figures for ONLY the GTA for the 1988-1992 years. 1987 has Trans AM and GTA figures combined.
According to the 1990 order sheets, bright blue metallic was available with silver Aero molding in 1990 on the Trans AM.
GTA's were only available in solid colors (all one-tone colors). Most of the GTA one-tone colors were also available on the Trans AM.

Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
In 1987 there was three seating options for Firebirds (including TA & GTA)..
- Base: Flat door panels, standard seats
- Custom: Formed Door panels, "Custom" Seats with the seatback pocket.
- Deluxe: some years called the "Ultima" seats, Formed Door panels
In 1987 the Formed "GTA" Door panels came with both the "Custom" and the "Deluxe" interiors. The Deluxe is what we call the GTA seats. The base seats came with the flat door panels similar to what the Camaros got.

In 1988 This changed, only the Deluxe seating came with the formed door panels, This continued thru 1989, and 1990 I want to think all GTA's got the flat door panels as well..
Talk about getting off topic.

No the pinstripe was not a factory option, it was most likely a dealer installed option though. I have one just like that one on my GTA.
Re: 1985-1987 trans am's with hood bird option questions.
I do not believe the GTAs had that pinstripe as a factory option.
I do know they didn't have the lower accent stripes that some of the Trans Ams had.
