Trans Am RPO sources

The winter has left me unable to work on my 86' Trans Am for quite some time, so I figured over the winter I would get some research done. Before the end of fall I removed the interior from the car to get a look at the floors and get it ready for new carpet, etc. When I pulled the carpet I was looking for a build sheet, all i found is...where it had been! The car had a serious leak into the passanger compartment at some point and the sheet had nearly desolved away! I pulled the carpet up perhaps too quickly and was left with an unreadable "print" of the sheet on my floor board. Worse yet is the fact that somewhere along the way somebody had taken the RPO sticker out of the center consol! So I'm left with a solid; digital dash, TPI, WS6 Trans Am...those are the options I have been able to confirm. I have put my VIN into compnine.com and nothing shows up, which bothered me until I put in the VINs for some friends GMs of the same year, and nothing for most of them either...compnine must not have gotten to 86' yet.

Does anyone here have any advice that could help me get my RPOs? Could a dealership do it? I have worked at dealers in the past but never had to trace RPOs and at that time I didn't have the car.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Unless your car was Canadian, the only record of the RPO codes was the SPID in the glove box. Compnine doesn't have the records because GM didn't keep them for more cars before about 1990.

You could try to obtain a copy of the original invoice. Pontiac Historical Services might be able to supply you.

The following is the service that Drew speaks of:
http://www.gmmediaarchive.com

You could try the dealer as it wouldn't hurt. But if Compnine.com doesn't have it, the chance is probably slim. As Drew mentioned, they are pretty much confined to 1990 and newer ThirdGens unless the car was Canadian.

Note that what you seen could be an interior trim sheet and not the master build sheet. These cars had a few trim sheets as well as build sheets. The locations that these sheets are in does vary and some didn't even have them. If it was the interior trim sheet you seen, it would not contain a complete listing of the RPO codes and their definitions like the build sheet would.

Re: Trans Am RPO sources

That makes a lot of sence, my 91 firebird shows up on Compnine. I'll visit the dealership I used to work at tomarrow and see what they can do. I will deffinately contact Pontiac Historical Services to try and get a copy of the invoice, since I'd like to get as much documentation as possible, I'm restoring the car. It really bugs me that someone removed the SPID though. Thanks for the advice guys!

Go to PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) look it up on the web,get in touch with them and they will mail you a form to fill out and then you fax it back to them. You will receive a build sheet,a original window sticker and all the information on that vin. no. and only that car.It will cost 100 bucks, but it is worth it,It's priceless to just know where, when, and how your car was built.
PS it will have all your RPO's and all your options and what they cost.

Re: Trans Am RPO sources

Unless something changed, GM Archives (noted above) took over 1987 and newer GM vehicles from PHS.

Also, PHS website does not list a buildsheet as being available. I've not heard of them being able to offer a buildsheet. Can you post yours? I'm thinking it's not a true buildsheet.

This is a true buildsheet:

I'm not aware of anyone being able to replicate one. I'm also unaware of that document being archived, unlike the invoices.

Re: Trans Am RPO sources

I didn't get that,I'm sorry,I received an original dealer order sheet that lists the options that they ordered with the RPO codes.sorry about that! But he has a 86 and he could still go their for the information that he's looking for.
i don't know how to put pics on the web yet,I'll have to get my granddaughter to do that for me.
Can I get that build sheet from GM archives.
