The Differences between a 1985 & 1987 Base Camaro
Does anyone know if/what the difference is from a 1985 Camaro to a 1987 Camaro? Not an RS or Z28 but just a camaro
Re: The Differences between a 1985 & 1987 Base Camaro
The difference is barely enough to notice. 86 & 87 have the third brake light on top of the hatch, or 87 has it in the spoiler if it has one. There may have been a slight change in the design of the wheels. 85 the Sport Coupes still used 14" wheels, by 87 they'd switched to mostly 15's. There might have also been some changes in paint, striping, etc, or in the upholstery, but by and large they're the same car if similarly equipped.
There are larger differences under the hood... 87 V8's got the CS alternators instead of the older SI style on 86-older. Some of the emissions equipment changed. 87 V8's got a 1 piece rear main seal, centerbolt valve covers, roller cams, divorced coil distributors, etc. 85 might have still had a clutch fan, while 87 should have an electric fan...

thank you! i just lost my 85 in a fire and now have a 87 and just wanted to know if there was much difference.

If anything the 87 has a slight advantage due to advances in technology. If it's a V8 the engine has a handful of upgrades that make for longer life. Modern oils don't have the additives necessary for non-roller camshafts, meaning that the 87's roller cam will probably last a lot longer. Given the choice, the 87 is probably a better car in general.
Looks like a nice car too...

Of course in 88, the Sport Coupe became basically the same as a later RS, with the usual ground effects, aluminum wheels, etc. 87 was the last year for the basic Camaro.

yeah i was just wondering if there as a diference in the body besides the little brake light in the back. Both of my cars are/were a 305 V8.
