Order of build/VIN #

I had a little conversation with coolram62 about our '83 Z-28's. Both were built in Norwood in June of 1983. Mine was built in the 2nd week of June, his the third week. The odd part is his has a lower VIN # than mine. His:153295, mine: 172394.
I was under the impression that the VIN numbers related to the order that the cars were built. If thats the case, whats going on with our cars? My body plate # D06B1FP87N172394.

Ideas?

Re: Order of build/VIN #

My understanding is that is general true, cars are made in sequence. however in the course of production anything can happen. the VIN could have been assigned then the car put on hold for parts or whatever reason. There is no law that says you must make cars in sequence. My 83 T/A has 2 VINs. One when the body was made which was then crossed out and another that was re-stamped a few VINs later. the later VIN is whats on the cowl tag. Just a thought.

Coyote I know the reason now for the discepancy of our VINs. I hadn't noticed your Z is a Norwood build. Mine was built in Van Nuys so that explains it. It's still interesting that the cars themselves, build dates and VINs are that close together having been built at different plants.

Re: Order of build/VIN #

The difference in Production plants would explain it...

However if the question ever comes up again, keep in mind that like Jeff mentioned, IF by chance the car was partially built and it was discovered that some part was not available, the car was supposed to be set aside until those parts became available. The VIN was assigned early on as to identify what parts were to be installed.
