Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
Thats kinda cheap in my opinion, I usually see these camaros with around 30k miles go for $13k-15k on average. Yet this is an 84 all stock I suppose with under 4.8k miles?

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
The dealer gave me the number of the original owner.
He bought it new in 84 drove it to weddings and funerals.
He is in his 60s and traded it in for a new truck.
He babied this car and it shows.
and they are the original tires
(just risked my life driving it home on them)
It has had 2 oil changes (I'm giving it a third this weekend)
The longest trip was about 200 miles on it.
I couldn't pass on this car its my first NEW car
I have 6 months to decide if I'm going to use it or just save it for the future.
I have a couple of third gens so I'm leaning towards saving it.
Maybe when I'm 60 it will still have 15 thousand on it

This sounds awesome. I say save it since you have others to drive. I look forward to seeing pics.
I'd love to have a Camaro like that. It would look nice parked next to my 22k mile 84 Mustang.

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
I didn't get a chance to see the ad. How much were they asking?
Also, be careful with that old oil. I found many years ago that changing the oil even if the car sits is a requirement. I changed the oil and stored the car for about a year. When I drained the oil, it was all black and thick, not green and runny like it was when it went in. I would've thought it was ok, but when I saw that, I knew to change oil regularly even in a stored car.

Wow, that's a really stripped down car. It's even got the base high back seats and vinyl door panels. Does the car have any options at all? How much were they asking for it?

the original owner ordered it
he told me the only option he put on it was the rear defroster.

They were asking $9500 plus dealer fees tags etc
can't buy a good new car for that

Very cool...I don't even like 82-84 third gens all that much, but for that price, I cannot fault you one bit for buying it. Love the color, too.
Good luck with it...post more pics when you get them!

My biggest concern now is the best way to preserve it for later.
haggling = better deals is what I meant sorry

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
It won't be bad to preserve. I'm guessing getting it off those tires would be high on your list. I have 2 low milage (not as low as yours though) unrestored 80s cars and it's really not been that hard keeping them nice and even driving them on occasion. I'm sure your car is in good hands. Hopefully you don't just hold down the garage floor with it, lol.

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
I think buying this one gives me an excuse to drive my iroc more and run its mileage up
I wish I owned a museum or a show room for the 84. It belongs on a show room.

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
That's true it would look good on a show floor. Hopefully you can at least take it to a few shows so people can see it. It's a great reference. I work weekends so my cars are pretty much just for me to look at since I don't want to drive them much. One of them was featured in a magazine last summer though not my low milage one. That would be cool for your car too! Something like Hemming's Muscle Machines. They tend to put 80s cars in there sometimes.
Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
That looks very similar to my first car. It was the same color blue, no power windows or locks, AM/FM stereo only, five speed and AC. It had the blue vinyl high back seats. I had my driver's license 10 days and the car was totaled when an 18 wheeler ran a yield sign and ripped the nose off the car! I'd love to get another similar and I think you just did. Unfortunately, this is the only picture I have of that car.
Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
Nice buy, even at asking price, I'd say. It's nice to see that some of these cars are still out there in that condition. You seldom see early 3rd gens in nice shape. I am quite partial to them, as my first car was a new 82 Z28. Keep it nice! Thanks, Oldtimer.

I love the mag, and find it sad they don't show 80s stuff as much as they used to.
Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
I've contacted Hemmings Editor Richard Lentinello and voiced my opinions about their content. I mentioned to him that they used to do more 80s cars and now they have reverted to the 60s and early 70s, just like everybody else. I mentioned that the young car owners of the 80s are in their 40s and 50s today and that the 60s muscle car guys are approaching their 70s and 80s. I spoke with him months ago on the phone and followed up recently via email. Jason, believe it or not, I contacted him regarding your car. I have never heard back from him.
I tried getting my car in the magazine a number of times, in an article other than the Buyer's Guide" and I got nothing. They agreed that the 80s cars should have more content, but I don't see any results. Maybe it's time I call again. Years ago when they were looking for an IROC-Z to feature, I worked with them on the details, but they ended up using a car that was closer to them than I was. The editor George Mattar was really interested in addressing "newer" cars, but then he was transferred to a different division and Terry McGean took over. Terry won't even return my emails or phone calls!

2) I started subscribing because I loved the depth of coverage...now every month I lament it looking like the same old "old car rag." I may not even keep my subscription, which is sad because historically it was by far my all-time favorite mag, by far.
I've let all my other subscriptions lapse except for GMHTP...that one I will not renew either, because they seem to have forgotten TPI helped launch their damn magazine!

I can't help but notice how ugly that 5th gen looks next to that gorgeous 3rd gen, lol. Great find, and love the color combo. Still looks good even for todays standards.

I had thought for sure I'd be buying one and have one third, one fourth and one fifth. Instead, the '91 RS is long gone and the third gens took its place!

I think we need to start a group like alcoholics anonymous for Camaro nuts.
I'm at 6 thirdgens now.
F-Body Anonymous maybe
5th gens are too thick. (like them still but...)
The 5th gens trunk is almost the same height as the roof of a thirdgen.

Re: 4,800 miles on 84 z28 5 speed
The way I've justified it to my wife is that I've spent roughly $30,000 on my three third gens, between purchase price, maintenance, a repaint on the 86, and some other things.
The reality is, if I sold the cars today for fair market value, I would probably get that back or more without much issue. Three years from now, the cars will likely be worth as much as they are now, if not more. The cost of keeping them will be minimal. Meanwhile, if I paid $30,000 for a 5th gen, it'd be worth $20k in 3 years if I was lucky.
By indulging in third gens, I'm clearly making the practical choice
After being in car sales for 11 years, the one thing I hate more than anything is depreciation. Of the 4 toys I own, only 1 has suffered depreciation, and its barely depreciated $6,000-7,000 in 11 years and 31k miles of enjoyment.

Has anyone ever used are car storage bag for their car?
I did a little searching but wanted to know if anyone liked them or are they just a waste of time?

I am really liking this car. Can't wait to see more of it. I love my 67, but 82-92 is it for me, and I really favor 82-84 the most. I agree with JasonE...I have not had a car payment in near seven years by adhering to a similiar plan...A 5th gen will likely be nearing 15 years old before I have one, if at all.. Really good score on this low mile, and low option car..

Badass car, and I prefer stripped down cars. Really good find, and I wouldn't have had a problem paying $9500 for it either if it runs as great as it looks (though I would have haggled as well, who doesn't?).
