That is a nice car, and should do well at Indy. The 82 at the upcoming Seattle Mecum is another beauty.

Re: Third gens made Mecum's top 5

I was following this car with great interest.

http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...QtCZJJ3g.email

Been thinking about this car since it was first listed many months ago, before I had bought my '88. Seriously considered waiting for the auction to come around and making a run at it, but found my car locally, and decided to go that route. Bid to $7k, but not sold.

Dave, I like that one, too. Those 84 anniversary cars are really unique. I loved the look and content back in 84, and the car is perhaps even more beautiful now. L69 / stick combo, too. I think $7k is a little light for the car, and could see even $10g for it if it really is as clean as it looks. Clearly, the 3rd gens are bargains, still today. Look at some of the other cars at the auction, and see that plenty of questionable pieces bring similar or higher money.

I agree. My brother and I were going to take some time off work and go down there. But it seemed a good chance this car would break into 5 digits, and that was a little more than I wanted to spend. Not that it's not worth it, just that I had a budget, and a number in mind. Then you add in vacation time taken, money to drive down, hotel, registration fees, food, auction fees, etc. I just thought a local solution was better for me. Also, if I bought this car, I would want to preserve it. Those seat covers, white shifter, white wheel...I just wanted something that I was a little more comfortable with driving more. Not that I don't intend to do my best to preserve what I did buy...but that's a personal decision of course.

Re: Third gens made Mecum's top 5

Javier, I think you are right on the money with your estimate. I has to bring mid teens, even though its not a G92 or 1LE car, given the super low miles.
Dave, I know what you mean. I would love the 82 at the upcoming Seattle Mecum auction, but the combo of airfares, hotel, registration fee, trucking fee, and the 8% buy fee over the gavel price make it a daunting adventure. I can't see how I'd avoid at least $4g in extra expense, even if I got the car at a reasonable number.

The estimated sell price on Mecum's site 2 weeks ago was $25k. I dont see that now. I lost interest.

In some regards consider this... the car was originaly about that price new. I know Scott Moyers car was around $20K new, so good reason tells me that this car too would be about that price. That was 23 years ago.

Really, all things being equal that car should be worth about $30K. Apparently not.

I'm waiting for the day when 3rd gens skyrocket in value (not that I'm ever gonna sell). It will happen. Think about it. 2nd gens are doing that now, and they made 200k+ Birds back in '77 alone. Our 3rd gen production numbers were always much lower, add to that a lot of people drove them into the ground because they didn't think they were collectible especially with the higher performance 4th gens out or wrecked them. (By my estimate - unfortunately I don't have access to state registration numbers - probably at least HALF of all 3rd gens are no longer with us). Heck, the few times I had my car out for a drive the past 4 years, I definitely saw more people noticing my car than 10 years earlier. One guy drove like a bat out of hell down a country road to catch me and tailed me until I pulled into a church parking lot. (I don't like people following me.)

In my area, I only seen about 2 or so on the road (both Camaros) that are actively being used as daily transportation. All the rest are now fair weather drivers like mine.

And magazines, like HPP are all but ignoring them in their pages. So people don't have them in the front of their memories and aren't considering them collectable, causing people to move on - until the day the bug hits them and they scramble to run out and try to find one to buy. Likely kicking themselves they didn't buy one years earlier when the values bottomed out.

Re: Third gens made Mecum's top 5

I can say, that in my area with about 170,000 residents between 2 bordering cities, I have seen about 20 or so 3rd gens (both birds and camaros) in the past 3 years, not counting ones for sale. Throw those cars into the mix and you might have 25 cars. None of those for sale here are over 5k. Some on Craigslist with low miles (in the 40k range) that are within an hour of here are listed at 12k. I cant wait for the market to take off locally here, you know that time when the cars are old enough that original miles dont mean quite so much anymore vs the condition of the car overall. No one asks a guy with a 1st gen how many miles it has, that doesnt matter anymore. 2nd gens are getting into that market now and it's only a matter of time when our 3rd gens do the same.

Re: Third gens made Mecum's top 5

I remember locally it seemed that there was a ton of them 10 years ago, could not drive to work or walk down the road and see at least one or two... now I go days or weeks without seeing any. Not sure if people are just hording them, or they are just gone...

I know when I started my 3rd gen journey 14 years ago (dang) I could get just about any part I wanted in a junkyard and I had several to chose from and I could get decent parts... Now they are all gone, nothing left but junk... I had one guy try to sell me a dented Formula hood for $1200 because one went for that on ebay... I tried to explain that was not a steel hood on ebay but an aluminum one, which his was not...

Re: Third gens made Mecum's top 5

I will believe Mecum's and Barret Jackson are real world prices when everyone here starts buying their cars there. How many people on this site have made a purchase there? How many of your friends?

Auctions are made/designed/live for being spectacles and bringing out the "Who has the biggest pair?" mentality.

Not too mention most folks do not understand how many fee's get tacked on to the cars "sold" price and whether those are the across the block number or final paid by the new owner.

I hate everything that involves speculation, it tries to destroy things the average guy enjoys.

If you cannot find thirdgens for decent prices, you are not trying very hard.

Like I said, when everyone starts buying their cars there I will believe the prices.

Some things are rare, there is no disputing that. But one friend is not plural nor even close to a majority of the folks into these cars.

Was the car the 000001 VIN Jamaican yellow? Nice car indeed.

Well, we have a 91z 1LE coupe, with 4200 miles going in Montery in August. Lets see what this goes for. My guess is 27,500. I am going off of what Mecum has been bringing for clean 3rd gens.

seeing your car only wish i kept my GTA...every day i miss it more and more. Be proud of what you own for there are many like myself, who remember what they use to own and then one day, they will be in search of another ride to return them back to their youth and their memories of yester-year. I know i'll be looking out for another GTA one day...

Montery Catalog is out. The 91z 1LE 5.7l is not on the Featured listings. It will defiantly lower the exposure. Someone could pick this up for a decent price. I'll lower my estimate to 20k

No sale. High bid was $16,000. Would like to know what the reserve was.
