Looking to get back into a third gen
So I came across a 1991 Z28 with the 5.7L 350, and I was wondering if someone could educate me on the value.
Here's some info on the vehicle:
current owner has had it for a year or 2 (cant recall what he told me exactly)
50,000 miles
headers w/ 3" magnaflow exhaust
3.73 gears
auto w/ Shift kit
cloth interior (good shape)
new tint
The current owner fixed a broken bolt in the engine and re-tapped it and put new gaskets on. Added a BBK adjustable fuel pressure regulator, set to around 50 psi. added the gears. Also added a stupid jet stage 2 chip
The biggest issue with the car is that the clear coat is peeling. It's not horrible, but it's also not great. He also told me it's a little rusty underneath
He's asking somewhere in the mid $3,000 range for it. If I can talk him down to somewhere below 3k, I think it could be a good deal and a fun project car for the summer. What do you guys think? Can the paint be salvaged with clear coat peel? And also, how can I be sure it's a 50k mile car?

I am skeptical. Not usually that much disturbance underhood on a 23 year old, 50k mile car. It's hard to see in the pics, but was the heater box cut up and the hole duct taped shut?
I would also be worries about rust in your geographic area. I always look at the strut towers very closely before I get underneath for a closer look for soft spots.

yeah when I talked to the owner he mentioned that and trying to find a replacement to get the AC & heat hooked back up. I'm not sure what that's going to take to get it fixed. I don't think the condition under the hood looks that bad either.
And that's the worst thing about looking for cars in my area. Most have rust in some way or another. It sounds like the current and previous owner have put some money into it, so I'm hoping it's not that bad underneath or else why put money into it at all? I won't know till I go look though

2300-2500 bucks, if it is not soft with rust. Unless there is proof that things were done to the car (recipts, obvious replaced parts, etc) those things wet never done, get it? Anything can be fixed unless it is rusted through. I I'd be leery of what "bolt" that broke on our in the engine. That sounds, well, off. I'd probably grab it for 2300, if it was not rusted out.

Either that or the odoneter is just broken. My firebird has 4000 miles more on it because it just stopped rolling over. It was a while before I caught it and fixed it. Maybe it broke and they did not care to fix it. 50k is highly doubtful.

Re: Looking to get back into a third gen
Update: Today I had to make a drive out to Buffalo, so I stopped to check out the car because it was on my way. And let me tell ya pics do not do this car justice... It is in BAD shape. The body was way worse than it seemed in the pics, and after taking a look underneath, there was no way I would touch this car. Engine bay was rough and interior was so-so. I did hear it run and I will give it some credit because it sounded good. No gas smell, and had a nice powerful response, but other than that it was falling apart.
It had the 145 mph speedometer which is correct for the 5.7L, so I guess its possible that its still a 50k car? not that it matters. My theory is that the car was driven for a while and then just sat for years, slowly rusting away. Anyway, kill this thread. On to the next one. Thanks for the input guys

New theory, someone swapped in the cluster because it's a 5.0L. Snapped a pic of the vin code today and it has a F for the 8th digit. It might as well have 200k on it. What a POS

Good job checking it out. I'm always amazed how people will buy these cars without looking under them!

What do you want to do with the car? Thats the 1st question I would ask. Do you want a low mile original car that dosen't need to be restored - if thats the case this car isn't it. It has a lot more than 50,000 miles like others have said. Thats not bad but, this car is going to need to restoration / repair work to bring its condition back up.
Also the 1991/1992 Z28's with L98's were not available T-Tops from the factory. You could only get T-Tops on non-G92 spec Z28's. The LB9 1991/1992 Z28's were also only available in hardtop form as well. So if it has an L98 (a legit VIN number 8 code for the 8th digit) it has aftermarket T-Tops on it.
If you want to get this car in any case the mid $3,000 range is out of the question. This car will need a lot of work to bring it's condition back up. Then again a commodity is always worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
