1987 GTA steering wheel
Hello
I have two questions about 87 GTA which I have found to buy.
1. Is this possible that 87 GTA comes with factory steering wheel with radio buttons?
2. The decals below door locks are standard for GTA?
thx

Re: 1987 GTA steering wheel
The radio controls were introduced in 1988... never seen an 87... It would be possible to install the steering wheel control system, not sure how much work it would be, but it would not be impossible.
The original wheel was the "Formula" Steering wheel but with the GTA embossed (IIRC) emblem in the center. The Firebird, Formula, Trans Am all got the embossed bird IIRC, been a while since I have looked at my original wheel.
There were no emblems on the doors below the door locks.

Re: 1987 GTA steering wheel
There is no mention of this option in any '87 literature I have for the Firebird. It was available on the Bonneville and, IIRC, 6000 models.
Never seen an '87 with the controls. The steering wheel for '87 is one of the nicer looking of the 3rd Gen era, IMO. Love the small metal GTA emblem on the horn button.

Does the horn work on this car? It would be interesting to pull the control pad off (attached only with velcro) and see what is behind there.
Reason I asked if the horn worked is because that would prove the wiring harness for the radio is there because the whole assembly is unique to those type of wheels.

The GTA emblem on the 1987 wheel is not metal, it is just an embossed shape molded into the rubber and painted gold. It is quite detailed, the little bird even has wisp of fiery breath.
And I agree, by far this is the nicest third gen wheel of all.

Horn on radio control wheel is same as any other horn button - just a simple grounding switch. The fancy piece in this column is the turn signal switch - it has a light sensor that sends the control button signals to the radio.

Re: 1987 GTA steering wheel
My mistake.... I had one of the '87 wheels for years and had the emblem out last fall trying to clean it and thought it was metal.
