1988 Iroc,Convertible, T5, 3:45, 16" wheels, Dark Blue??
I just purchased a 1988 IROC, Its a convertible, Manual trans (T5), Performance axle (3:45), 16" wheels.....But its Dark Blue Metallic?
I'm positive its the factory color. All factory stickers are on and in the correct place. This color doesn't show to be an option for the Iroc. The car has 67K original miles. Car Fax and the build sticker inside the console confirm that this is an all original car. Just not sure how the color is possible? any thoughts from anyone?
Thank you, Josh

Post the spid for us?
A dark blue does not appear in 1988 for Camaros, just the bright blue WA9184.
Same is true for that year's Firebirds where the Medium Maui Blue carries the same code.
BTW, welcome to the board.

No its not a Clone the numbers all match and I have a perfect car fax to substantiate
everything. It show to be a very well performance optioned IROC but the Color throws me off.....I'm used to checking and crossing numbers on Gen1 Camaro but this if my first IROC and I love it.

Obviously, someone painted blue. The factory painted it black.
Post some pics.

Re: 1988 Iroc,Convertible, T5, 3:45, 16" wheels, Dark Blue??
Like I said, the car was originally black from the factory as per the SPID showing 41U for black.
It is a 1AZ which indicates it was an ordered/sold car for a customer. Doubt the customer would be happy ordering black and getting blue. Even more doubt that the factory would allow it.
Therefore, the car was repainted at some point.

If so it is the most extensive repaint in the history of repaint. I understand the code and had already looked it up. As hard as it is to believe without seeing it in person I don't believe it has been. All door stickers on the drivers door and under the hood and under the trunk deck lid are all Dark blue under them.....I'll try to get pictures tomorrow...

Your door stickers are in the wrong place - so something's been done.
Is it just me or is anyone else seeing a black car in that pic?
Nice car btw!

The door stickers are in the wrong location and there is no lower body stripe. DX3 is the code for stripe delete and you don't have that. This car has been repainted, no doubt. Also, Carfax is a joke and doesn't tell the full story. It only discloses information that's been reported. It cannot be relied on to tell the full accurate history of a car.

Many a rich Daddy or Uncle has paid cash to repair cars, some heavily damaged to prevent filing an insurance claim. Carfax does not pick up these 'cash' transactions. None the less, black, blue, red, or orange that is a fine and rare convertible that is very nice.

Interesting - the one on mine only goes back to 99.
What kind of car & what information did they include from the earlier dates? Were they registration events only?

For starters, that sucker is some dark *** blue if it is because that looks black to me. Secondly, you can think and wish and pray all you want that you have a 1 of 1 IROC with an impossible factory painted color, or you can come back to Earth and realize that no matter how factory it looks, it has been repainted. BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN.

same here, Carfax goes back to the day my car was first registered (6/89) with 9 miles reported. Through the years it basically lists each time the car registration was renewed, emission testing and a couple of repairs done at the chevy dealer. All the entries mention dates and mileage but it's easy to see how some events could have been left out of it.

My Carfax goes back to the day it rolled out of the dealers lot. Interestingly, Carfax shows no accidents, but Autocheck does (correctly) show a "minor accident". Also, none of the events line up between the two reports.

Interestingly My Autocheck and Carfax reports have many of the same entries for the same dates, but one will have mileage the other will not or vise verse. Some things are missing others are not, most entries do not have mileage...
In Michigan after so many years (I think 10) they quit using mileage on Title transfers...

Nice car anyways. Does look pretty dark to me, black really. Paint job doesn't take away from it IMO. Most of these cars will need one at some point. Clearcoat peeling in a few places on mine and its been garage kept all its life.

Sounds like my '88 IROC. Beautiful Bright Blue--except that wasn't an available color on IROC-Z in '88. Turns out mine was originally black, too. I didn't catch it until I after I bought the car...even the engine compartment was Bright Blue. In fact, the only spot I've found so far in the original color is the transmission hump under the console, so someone was thorough.
Beautiful convertible, though.

My CarFax goes all the way back, too; was a nice "check" on the mileage claims and other supporting documents.

I hate the paint isn't original......I paid $3,600 for this thing.....sounds like I overpaid...and I just put new tires on it!.....especially with 67,000 miles on it. Oh well....live and learn. I'll just put it back up for sale....Thanks guys!

You definitely didn't overpay. Unless you bought the car to show in concours shows, you'd be making a mistake to sell.
Re: 1988 Iroc,Convertible, T5, 3:45, 16" wheels, Dark Blue??
You bought a convertible with 67k miles that has a repaint done so well, you thought it was original, and paid only $3600? Keep the car and enjoy it. If you paid $12k for it, I would have to agree, but at $3600, you stole the car!
Re: 1988 Iroc,Convertible, T5, 3:45, 16" wheels, Dark Blue??
Also, I didn't look close enough before, but does this car have the spoiler extensions on the back side of the doors? If so, keep it. Not sure if they are original to this car or not, but very few have the door extensions in '88.

Does anyone know about how many cars they made in 1988 with the Iroc, convertible and Manual transmission combination?

I'd be a player on the car if you are interested in turning it, color change or not. Shoot me a PM or e-mail me at thebosspontiac@hotmail.com if you decide to let it go.
Re: 1988 Iroc,Convertible, T5, 3:45, 16" wheels, Dark Blue??
Does any car wear a convertible outfit better than a thirdgen? I think not.
As for CarFax, it's crap. If it doesn't say anything negative, I still don't really trust it. If it does say something negative, even though it might still be wrong, I'll avoid buying the car.
I had two wheels ripped off my 5.0 in my sig 6 months to the day I took delivery, right out of my controlled access garage. The creeps did a whopping $10k in damage in the process to steal two lousy-*** wheels. I filed a police report. I asked the body shop, the insurance company, and the police who it is that actually reports to CarFax/AutoCheck, and they all pointed fingers at each other. And you know what? I ran both the AutoCheck and the Carfax a couple months back (well after any claims/reports would've settled and been reported), and both of them are spotless and I thought for sure someone in the trifecta of police/insurance/body shop would nail this car on both, especially with $10k in damage. Nobody will ever know that car got seriously messed up now that there is crusty dirt on all the bolt heads under the car that were removed to repair the car (and the body shop did do an excellent job repainting 4 of the body panels and doing the mechanical work). In fact, I've shopped the car to several dealers as a potential trade and they've all said the car was outstanding and a car they would want on their lot.
You have a pretty clean IROC vert, enjoy it and don't worry about the originality since it's already gone. Any vert is a good deal at $3600, let alone a clean 67k mile IROC. Keep it, detail the hell out of it, and enjoy it. Welcome to the unoriginal enjoyment club.
