History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Can anyone help me, I spent some time on the phone this week with GM.
Trying to figure out why my Vin # does not come up anywhere in the
computer or anywhere online. Numbers do match under the windshield and front tag. I even found the build sheet 10 years ago. Maybe because pre computer
days. Here is a snapshot of my upper right hand corner of the build sheet.
Vin # 1G2AW87H5DN231826 matches under windshield and tag under hood.
What is the little 8 over the 1?
Thanks,
Al

I don't understand where you are trying to get your VIN to come up, or why you expect it should? The car is well over 30 years old. While I wouldn't call the 80's pre-computer days, if it were ever entered into a computer system, that system is probably long gone or archived and not likely to be connected to any internet server in use today. As for the numbers, look at the rest of the sheet. The little 8 is the cell number. Each cell has a number in the upper left corner. Just like when you do your taxes.
There is no known online source that can provide you GM's records (such as RPO codes, etc.) because that information is not available online for pretty much anything older than 1990 - unless the vehicle is an export.

The "8" is just an identifier of the box on the build sheet form. Notice the box to the right of it is labeled "9". Kind of like your W2 you get from your employer.
The VIN is split between box 8 and 9. The 1G2AW87H5DN is the first part and box 9 (231826) has the last part. Together they make the VIN and should match what is on the car. In your case 1G2AW87H5DN231826 is the correct VIN based on the photo. The 127812 is a factory number of some sort.
EDIT -
NOTE: This is only true of Norwood cars, Van Nuys put the whole VIN in Box 9 and the VIN is also be in at the Bottom of the build sheet next to box 118.

The box numbers correspond to the parts we put on the car. Certain components required identifiers so we would not put wrong part on V8 car vs. V6 as an example. Our parts at our work stations had various part numbers for identifiers. We would loom at the Build Sheet and our specific box to see what part went on that particular car.
