Baffled Fuel Tank

Hi guys, I took the tank out of the '88 Trans-Am (TPI 305) today and found some interesting stuff. The tank has a metal baffle from one side to the other, the pass. side has a hole about 2'' in diameter the center is open to the bottom of the tank where there is some kind of a white plastic baffle and the driver's side of the tank has a wrap around type baffle and what looks like a tube coming from the filler neck exiting into the tank just to the side of the opening for the sending unit (I guess that's why I couldn't pour the fuel out of the filler neck). Also there is a PY sticker on the filler neck itself. It looks original with regards to undercoating. Is there a date code on these tanks like on the '68 Camaro? There just seems to be a lot going on in this tank compared to the wide open '68 Camaro tank. Thanks for any info., Ron.

Sounds about normal. The code on the sticker should match the code on the build sheet if you have it. There's some debate about which cars got a baffled tank, but generally the later cars all have them, and all the "service" tanks were the baffled style - so if the tank was ever replaced, it'd be the late style baffled tank.

OK, being it's a baffled tank should I get the strainer for baffled tanks? The strainer on the pump now is the one for non-baffled tanks (I guess), meaning it only goes out in one direction from the pump instead of two. Thanks for any info., Ron.

Re: Baffled Fuel Tank

The strainer should match the plastic baffle. My 1988 had a different plastic baffle compared to my 1989 1LE. So I can't say for certain if the wider strainer would fit properly.

Mark.

OK thanks, it has the standard strainer on it. I put about 70,000 miles on the car with it so I'll replace it with the standard one, which I already bought. Thanks for the info., Ron.
