Seriously? Many of the cars in the COTM are built by the members and at one time were beaters. I'll use both of mine as a reference, also, since I didn't buy mine as show cars, but as low mile originals over 16 years ago! It takes a lot of effort to keep a car looking new for 16 years, and still drive them. Many of the cars you see this month have had hours upon hours of detailing, paint correction, custom parts made to replicate the originals, etc.
This hobby is NOT 99% poor guys. It's been said before, and obviously needs repeating; If you're poor, you shouldn't have a hobby car. You should be using what finances you have on providing for your family and paying bills.

Honestly to me its more of a 'goal' or 'one day' type of thing that i'll eventually get my car to comparable standards to one of those nominated and maybe get car of the month myself!! Yeah its obviously human to judge; we all do it. But a statement like that is a little too far.

It's great that we have the car of the month, all winners well deserve it.
However I think the lack of participation is the fact that the links are not seen or difficult to find.
It was a brilliant idea to place photos of all the cars on the home page. This brings it up front and I think there will be more participation.

I feel as if tge COTM is more like a popularity contest of long time members. The "rich people" is totally subjective to disposable income but feel this is not a real expensive hobby although to get close to the levels of some of the COTM winners it does take some money OR a car that was bought 10+ years ago.
I own 4 "nice" 3rd gens & I personally don't feel any of them should be able to pull many votes in the COTM nor do I regularly post my car for most to see them.
All my cars are around 80,000 mile nice survivors but rarely post them on here.
I don't post my upgrades or cosmetic improvements but do feel most of mine are in the top 20% of the majority of cars here.
I agree that the COTM needs more participation but also agree that most of the winners are not low budget cars.
Personally I've been on the site for 5-6 years and have only met a couple members in person but I don't know any of the "winners".
I assume there are 10,000+ members & has to be more cars than that because there are lots of members who own more than one.
I think the nomination process is for "connected" members with a following by younger members or long time members who post every detail of their cars.
With that said I do vote but vote purely on the quality of the car. My vote is rarely for the winner in the COTM albeit subjective to my personal preference.
The COTM could almost be posted without pictures & the person whos car is best known or has the best following would win because of the "followers".

COTM should be a sticky at the top of the forum because it isn't the most easily found thread. Most people here use the site possibly as a search engine OR click "new post" when they enter.
I joined this forum about 6 months ago when I bought my 83 Z28 (it's ok, not great). I just voted a week or so ago for the first time for a car of the month because I really had a hard time deciding so just didn't vote. It's more fun to be involved.

Well, I guess it is kind of a popularity contest in that you need to post enough for people to know you and your car. Also, we are looking at pictures of these cars, they aren't being judged in person by NCRS judges, so there is a bit of a popularity factor there as well.
But since this is a totally online contest and 99% of the respondents haven't seen the cars they are voting for in the flesh, I'm not sure how else you'd work it.
I am totally in favor of a project car COTM, though. Totally in favor of oddball stuff like a Berlinetta COTM. Also in favor of a base car Camaro/Firebird COTM. But we've got to have people with these cars post and post pics of them, so others can nominate them.
The COTM was to showcase the best of the ThirdGens in the community. The COTM shows, to us in the community and to those outside, there's some really nice ThirdGens out there.
I really don't think we need a COTM to show "junk" (as stated above) to reinforce the image many members, especially in this section, want to fight against that these cars have long had.
Even if a car doesn't win the voting for COTM, many of the nominated cars that make it into nominating are very good examples of ThirdGens.

It is extremely offensive to assume that members who have nice cars dont appreciate what they have. Totally WRONG! And BTW "rich" people dont own third gens. They own Lambo's and Ferrari's.

Thank you kymmee. Well said. It doesn't take a fortune to own a nice third gen. And I will not nominate some abused beater for COTM when another member pours their hard earned $ and time and labor into their car to have something nice.
I've had a couple nice thirdgens worthy of being COTM but I never really put them out there in the past. I think my current ride is pretty clean and worthy of the COTM but I'm sure everyone thinks their ride is.
and yes, I appreciate my car because its 25 years old and extremely clean with 56K miles on it. Not many of these left on the road.

I agree one-hundred percent. Its not "wealthy" members, its popular members.
Besides, it is way more satisfying having people compliment your car face to face when you're out-and-about versus a line of text on a computer screen.

I should clarify my post: I totally agree that the COTM nominees deserve the recognition & worthy of being a representative of the site.
I wouldn't even waste my time voting for a junker COTM but would vote for a COTM with the best before & after COTM.
Not a rich person hobby by any means but these comments I can see from some of the daily driver side. All mine get stored for the winter & going to continue in my personal quest for super clean factory spec cars.

I disagree with this 100%. I've been a member of TGO since 1999. I forgot my account and recreated a new account in 2000. So, almost 18 years on this board, and I've never won.
I'm a moderator, have been very involved in getting parts custom made for people, been involved in getting people access to special shows (Norwood Gathering), reached out to get new members of rare cars (The last 1992 Camaro made, the owners of the 4.3 mile Camaro) and many more. I've made a point of meeting members when I travel (chazman, okfoz, ABUBACA, Willie, etc), worked on members cars at car shows and have taken my car to shows all over the country (Hot Rod Power Tour, Camaro SuperFest, FBody Gathering, etc). I helped design Tshirts for the members, once on my own, and again with okfoz. My car has been in magazines, books, GM Licensed Tshirts and catalogs, so my car is well known on these boards and others.
With all of the publicity of my car, and as "well known" as it is, you'd think I would have won the COTM at some time, based on your statements.
The COTM is supposed to be fun, so why ruin it? Also, why do we need a COTM for cars that are dented, multi colored, work in progress, etc? That's the majority of them out there. COTM is a virtual car show. Car shows usually have cars that are worthy of shows. I've never seen a car win a car show that's "beat". Think about it.
The money thing....I mean....I don't really know what to say. I mean I guess that's why we're still fighting the stigma. Same reason no one makes repop parts.
Second, if you don't have a thread in your respective Camaro/Firebird Member forum, or at the very least a high volume of good pics out there in various threads, don't complain. That's where 99% percent of the nominations/pics are coming from. It's free folks.
Third....lemme see if I have this right. We have a regular group of participants in COTM.....they ask for more participating, and everyone NOT participating says "it's just the same popular people always participating". Folks come on. Think it through. Isn't the very title of this thread asking for MORE participation?
Full circle. ....spend a little money, turn some wrenches, ask some questions, answer some questions, post some pics, and before you know it you're popular, your car is nice, you have exposure and you get nominated.
I do think it is strange you haven't won. Not because you're a Moderator or because how long you've been here or even how well known you are or even that you're active but because your car should be a COTM & I'm sure it will be soon because it is deserving of the reward.

I'll win someday. Maybe when all of the other really great cars have already won and there's nothing left to choose from! But, that's fine with me. It's all for fun and I really enjoy seeing the other really nice cars on this board.
At one point, my car was seen as an uber low mile original, but that was years ago. Now, with 20k miles on it, there are MANY cars that have much lower miles than mine and deserve these monthly wins. Congrats to all of the past winners. The cars are truly worth the selection.
Scott, speaking only for me, I think you're probably TOO popular! I mean I just looked over the December COTM again, and I didn't study your cars because I feel like I already know them. ...at a proper show I would give your cars their due, but here......I like to give the nod to another car that stands out to me for whatever reason.
Trust me when I say that's an enormous compliment. I trust you won't stay up at nightly blaming me for no COTM award on your wall!!!!
I won't stay up at night due to losing COTM. That's why I voted for Stuart's car. Definitely an eye popper! I love the two-tone Formulas and the Grey GTAs. As soon as I saw it in here, I threw my vote that way!!!
I too prefer the 'in progress' cars over the complete ones. I think the guys that go to car shows get enough pats on the back for their ride; I'm all for showcasing some WIP cars. (emphasis on showing the progress, before/after, etc)

Id love to daily-drive that one Don! Don't get to drive mine enough just to shows, very few weekends I don't work, and Sunday strolls every now and then.
I say no to project cars for COTM, but I'd be interested in:
1. Every day heroes (daily drivers, not show quality)
2. Function over form (the sleepers, cars that don't look like a show car but will collect on race day)
3. Patina (car must run and be street legal or used regularly in track events - this would be mismatched panels, some visible wear, etc.)
My cars are not what I consider perfect by any means but still take them to shows, I just don't put mirrors under them or spot lights. I consider mine as weekend cruisers.
Some of the reasons I like this website is seeing all the love put into the cars represented here and especially COTM. More than a show of "Wealth", it shows the dedication and the will to make and keep them looking and running their best.
True it can take a lot of money to restore one of our cars, but the time invested personally by the owners is more impressive to me. You can't get cars to be in that kind of condition without putting in the work. I commend guys like Scott, Okfoz, Chazman etc. for all the work they put into their cars. It takes a lot of dedication to get them to a point where they look, and keep them looking, as good or better than the day they were made. I don't have the time or facilities anymore to do this, but I appreciate and look forward to seeing the results of those who can.
