History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I had a 95 Trans Am which I absolutely loved, back in the 90's. But with kids and life I had to let it go in 99. Now, I'm at the point where I can swing a fun car again.
I've found an 86 Z28 locally which seems to be a pretty good deal. Couple of questions though, before I go to look at it in person this week. According to the VIN, it is an LB9 car originally, however the engine was recently replaced with a new Grooms engine. I'm assuming it was replaced with the same engine, but I will confirm that.
Body is in good shape, 1 door ding in passenger door. Clearcoat is peeling in places on the hood and decklid. Interior looks pretty clean. Needs new T-top gaskets and window moldings on the drivers door, they are cracked and chunks missing.
OK, Questions...
It's being advertised as a 68k mile car, but looking at the odo, I'm thinking 168k...the numbers don't line up..fair assumption?
Also, the car is black, with the gold lower ground effects and wheels...but the seats are blue. Replaced at some point or was this combo really available?
Also, what's a fair price for this car? I know what he is asking, wondering if there is any room to negotiate..
Ok, thanks, I guess that makes sense.
I emailed the guy, but he hasn't responded yet, but I'm trying to find out about the engine.
Here is a pic of the whole car.
I'd bet money that the odometer rolled back and its actually 169,000. a quick way to tell is how worn the pedals and carpet are. it needing a new engine before 69,000 is unlikely but possible.

more pics would be nice .. the way you are describing the car and looking at that one interior pic i hope you are not thinking about paying alot for it ..
Don't put too much weight into what number the odometer shows. It rolls over at 100k, and they're incredibly easy to exchange with another car, or simply roll the numbers to whatever mileage you want. Look instead at the condition of the car.
If you just want a Camaro and you're not looking for something rare, collectible, or packed with performance, you could sure do worse. However, 86 was a bad year for performance. The LB9 was detuned with a smaller cam in 86. You can bet on 2.77 or 3.08 gears too. Not that an 85 or 87 is any powerhouse, but 86 is notably slower. Beyond that, it's not an Iroc, which isn't a bad thing, it's just somewhere in the middle, more than a base Camaro, less than an Iroc. FWIW.
The wood interior overlay is aftermarket, just an FYI.
Like drew said, you can find an 85 LB9 camaro and it will be faster than a 86. I personally hate the 86 model year, there just wasn't anything good option wise for that year, plus I'm not a fan of the outside hatch 3rd brake light. But if its something you don't care about or plan to do a LS swap and can get the car cheap enough go for it. But if you want stock 85 and 87 will always be better than a 86. The only thing on the camaros for 86 that was better than a 85 is the computer was better... You could tune a 86 where a 85 computer was so slow there difficult tune over a 86-89 computer. Or wait to find a 87 and up L98 350 car if you want stock, it will be the biggest difference you see vs a 86 LB9 car.
Thanks for the info. I suspected the wood interior pieces were aftermarket. Personally it doesn't really matter about the year too much or the fact it's not an IROC. I'd read elsewhere the 86 was down on power compared to an 87. I did find out it is a 169k mile car and the engine was replaced with another LB9. But the body is clean except for the paint and the interior is good except for the faded material.
Sooo.. the million dollar question, what is a fair price? I have a number in mind, I just want to make sure I'm in the ballpark.
