Re: My 1989, G92, 5 speed, N10, DX3, IROC-Z

I wonder if you could make little "spikes" on the back sides of your floor mats with a hot glue gun?

I've been wishing I had factory carpeted mats in my car, but I know I'll never find them with a one year only interior color. I do have mint factory rubber floor mats....but it's just not the same. Although the pattern on my rubber mats matches the pattern on the door sill trim, so that's kinda different, I guess lol

Someone needs to 3D print the GM logos for the purists.

I was worried about floor mats back when I put new carpet in my Formula. It was a bit nerve-racking driving the car since I was always worried about tracking dirt or water onto the new carpet. Eventually picked up a set of NOS floor mats, then realized that the floor mats were worth more than the ACC Carpet, and that they'd just get dirty too. Plus I didn't like the way they felt under my feet, or how they'd scrunch up under the pedals. Finally decided that it's a non-issue since the car never gets driven in weather, and that even if the carpet did get dingy it could be replaced against just as easily as the first time.

I'd imagine some copyright issues, unless someone were to pass them out as free "gifts" with a shipping and handling fee.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect to see them as a licensed reproduction part, or from one of the typical vendors. I would think it'd be something that someone does for themselves, and potentially makes the files available to other like minded folks... But I suppose the legal aspect of it being a logo would prevent it from being done in any kind of mainstream, public, manner.

But ACC has so many grays! Which one is the right one? I called ACC and asked for 3 of the gray color samples and they sent me this.

I've previously noticed that the driver's side mat and the passenger side mat were two slightly different shades. This makes it obvious. I think the second from the top seems like the closest. What do you guys think?

So ACC can do the second from the top in the Camaro mats, but it's considered a custom color. I think I'm gonna take the samples out of the plastic and triple check before ordering.

I've read this thread a few times. Nice ride for sure.
I think pulling the samples from the plastic is a smart choice. Do they charge for the samples or are you supposed to return them?

No charge. ACC was very helpful.

I've watched that burnout video about a dozen times over the past couple days. Puts a smile on my face every time.

I'm leaving this morning to pick up my new black '89 IROC. Can't wait!

Re: My 1989, G92, 5 speed, N10, DX3, IROC-Z

I have gray ACC mats in my GTA in gray. The car is not nearby or I take some picts. The color was very close, I want to say the floor mats where a fuzz darker gray than the oem carpet. I also compared it to an area of the carpet that has never seen daylight & it was the same. So, not exact, but close enough where I didn't think they stood out.
I'll dig thought my files & see if I happened to take any pictures when I "installed" them

Chaz, what color mats did you get, yours looked much better in your earlier pictures than the ones I bought.

I purchased Dove gray from ACC They are a bit too dark though. Fit nice though.

Unless the Birds have a lighter colored carpet, But I would think its the same gray as the camaros?

Dove Gray is what ACC considers factory and that's lighter than the one I was thinking of ordering. I haven't ordered them yet, the silver Mustang GT has been monopolizing my time.

Re: My 1989, G92, 5 speed, N10, DX3, IROC-Z

See that oil stain on the floor? I've deduced that it is leaking from the AC compressor. The compressor has been spewing oil since day number one, but has gotten a bit more messy in the last couple of years or so.

It still holds a charge and blows cold, I've had to top it off twice in the past 10 or 15 years, though. I'd prefer to remove and reseal and keep the orignal, vs replacing it.

Thoughts and advice appreciated!

If it's a shaft seal leak, pick up a new seal and fix it yourself - whatever you do, dont replace the compressor - your car is far to original for that

I suspect a shaft seal. Can it be replaced on the car without losing the R12?

This is from the 1989 Firebird Service Manual - # 2 is the shaft seal - you can pick one up at your local Napa store

It's easier on the bench (compressor removed) but it can be done on the car

I guess I need to make sure it is in fact the shaft seal first. I believe it is because the compressor body is dry and the oil is on the clutch, front and wherever it spews. Space seems tight in front to get a puller on it though. I’d rather lose my R12 rather than risk damaging anything with a puller and close quarters while the compressor is on the car

You can evacuate and re-claim your R-12 and then re-service the system with it if you have access to the proper equipment.
Otherwise, there is a procedure in the factory manual for performing the shaft seal R&I with the compressor on the car -
you are a nervous nelly chaz.....

Love the seal initiative to keep your original functioning pristine- did ya consider grabbing a backup?
Eg

but for serpentine

I was under the impression these units conk out eventually..

I wouldn't be in this situation, had I simply ordered 1LE number 112 as I had intended.

Although itd be cool to have those front PBR brakes, it would suck to not have AC, power windows, etc.

Oh yeah- I’d love the front brakes first and foremost.
