Re: Name all the things wrong with this '89 IROC-Z "resto"
the 15” wheels are sad.. those taillights too.. and that DIY looking paint job.. yikes..
I’m not sure the T5 makes up for all that, but I agree.. for 5K I might pull the trigger and make some changes.. a real paint job, correct taillights, 16” IROC wheels would be a start..
It’s not the worst that happens to thirdgens out there..

So, 4 years ago this was a rust free, (other than battery tray), California car. It had a dirty, faded, interior and the driver's seat needed repair. It was given a quickie paint job in California, had a dent on the driver's side fender and had base car tail lights and a mid-70's chrome lighter. In general it was an honest car which was longing for a lot of TLC and a few parts.
Since then, it's gone through some auction perfuming and been flipped at least twice. I think the current dealer is dreaming at $15,800.
Honestly, I liked the car a bunch better before all the "flip fixes". And the chrome lighter survives!

Sad to hear that.. it’s sad that they try to make a quick flip on a car with potential..
Re: Name all the things wrong with this '89 IROC-Z "resto"
This is why I personally can't stand auctions and "collector" hype. This car wouldn't be worth $16k if it'd been well cared for, or properly restored. It's not even a truly desirable car for the year. No G92, no dual cats, no 16" wheels, no T-tops, etc. It's just a "base model" Iroc. But here it is with a tall tale and a ridiculous asking price.
This is a classic example of what's wrong with the hobby.

That was fast! Now with undercarriage pics!
Pity someone took a spray can to the front suspension and rear axle. Besides the battery tray, the undercarriage was super clean.

Someone really hacked up that Flowmaster install.

The bogus incorrect font and too large repro Iroc sticker makes me twitch...

What is sad is how easy the history of this car is to find. I feel sorry for the guy who buys this.

On the upside, maybe they'd throw the chrome lighter in the trash... Where it belongs.

But if it went away, it might be harder for those in the know to spot this Waldo in the future. It could increase the value almost as much as the incorrect 5.7L badge!
Or do you suppose the price is so high BECAUSE of the RARE!!! chrome lighter? Ay dios mio!

Considering this is the only 3rd gen I've ever seen with a chrome lighter, I'd call that super-duper rare. In fact I think that's a 1LE lighter!
The addition of the 5.7 badge is also a nice touch.....

I am not so sure if a dealer would care all that much about what we talk about here. They are not at all emotionally attached so wouldn't take any of it all that personal. It might annoy them, but not to where they would loose sleep over it. They just need to sell their inventory with a margin & move on.
I had often thought about how much I would enjoy buying & selling classic muscle cars, but in reality, I would spent too much time detailing & researching them. Then I would not want to sell them at all.
I think we (thirdgen members) look at these cars in a very different way.

No doubt about that. A dealer like this thinks they actually HAVE something, and that it's worth much more than they paid. They'll never listen to reason, and chances are they'll still end up selling it, for more than it's worth, to someone else who doesn't know **** from shinola.

It's the circle of getting screwed, and the "Collector Car Auction" is their Mecca. The dealer usually gets his money. It's the next owner that takes a bath.
A local "classic car" dealer had an '88 IROC convertible for sale. Lots of miles, L03 auto, looked like a partial respray, wrong decals, totally gross "custom" interior. They had it for sale at an outrageous price for months. You'd think it'd never get sold.
Then one day, a poor guy comes in, negotiates them down to $12+K and thinks he has a good deal.
I saw him in the car at a local a cruise night and introduced myself. He had a few things that needed fixing and I gave him my advice. At the end he asked me if I thought he got a good deal. I sort of skirted around that one.
A couple months later he said he wanted to sell it and get something else. He offered it to me for $5K. I had just bought my '87 vert so was out of the market, otherwise I would have bought it, fixed it and flipped it.
I told him I'd help him sell it and posted it on my 3rd gen facebook page. Someone saw it there and bought it for around $6.5K. I week later it was on CL for $9K.
So, never underestimate who might walk in and pull out their checkbook.

Wait a minute! It's back up an eBay and I just noticed this. Why does an L98 cammed, LB9 have a 5000 RPM redline tach? It should be 5500. Must have been swapped.

Man, even a nice, stock, original car would be over priced at $15,500 with 98k
Since it’s a Micky Mouse Resto/Flip, put some 16” wheels at least.. I would never pay over $10k for an IROC with the 15” wheels no matter how nice it is..

Woof! That ABS headliner looks like a deluxe family-size bag of smashed *******s. Why are all thirdgen repro parts such crap?
Re: Name all the things wrong with this '89 IROC-Z "resto"
In earlier picts I was taken back by the fish eyes in the clear coat of the rocker panel. Now they post a picture of the same rocker from another angle. There are more hangers in that clear coat than in my bedroom closet. yikes. What does the rest of the paint look like???
So many dealers asking big money for cars that are shown surrounded by other cool muscle cars, sitting on polished floors & bright lights. But at the end of the day the car goes home to the average guys garage, it's still just another car somebody will look at with regret.
This thing is the 4 wheeled version of a prostitute in vegas.

Still for sale. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Chevro...5:pf:0&vxp=mtr
Been on eBay for over a year. At some point, you've got to tell your sales manager that a nearly 100K mile car with a horrible repaint and after market seat covers isn't going to get $15K, no matter how long you list it.

Holy hell, this thread has made me glad that I haven't posted hardly any pics of my car. Ya'll would have a ball picking it apart
I won't lie though, it is pretty entertaining watching this car go from a $3k car to hopeful $15k. People really are out of their minds...
