1989 GM Engineering Project Direction

I thought this was interesting, I think it is limited to C-P-C (Chevrolet, Pontiac & Cadillac)

Re: 1989 GM Engineering Project Direction

what i find so interesting about our cars is they really are the last of the muscle/ pony car era where things were still built by hand and variations were numerous. computers and robots had not yet taken over. perfection not a possibility. notes like this reflect the era and the car.

VERY COOL. Is that LT5 with the DOHC and dual Multecs per cylinder the ZR1 engine? That thing is legendary. It was an insane engine for that time.

Yes! I was in college back in 1990 & I still remember where I was sitting when reading a magazine about the first tests of the ZR1 & the drivers description of feeling like his face was being peeled back from the acceleration that car had. I was thinking I would own, or at least drive one some day down the road. Of course who knew back then where the HP would end up 25 years later. But look how many years it took to top that HP from a factory production car in the US. Double the sticker price had to be the most expensive/ratio single option ever put into a vette?
Still haven't driven one, & after getting to drive a couple of todays crazy fast cars, it likely wouldn't be that much of an impression. However, for nostalgic reasons it would still be very cool. For 1989, that really was amazing to say the least.

Yes. That engine was originally developed as an engineering exercise in a joint partnership between GM and Lotus; the original work on test engines was done in England. The subsequent production engines weren't actually built by Chevrolet; that work was farmed out to Mercury Marine. IIRC, a little less than 7000 Corvettes were fitted with the LT5 between '90 and '95. Those cars are worth a lot of $$$ today.

In 1990, I drove to a nearby Chevy dealership that was advertising a new ZR1 for sale just to get a look at the engine. I don't recall the exact sticker price on that car, only that it was much higher than regular-production-equipped Corvettes, and even to that high price, a significant 'dealer surcharge' was added to the factory price due to the limited availability of ZR1s.

I thought C-P-C stood for Chevrolet Pontiac Canada? Wasn’t that on the sign in front of the Van Nuys Plant?

Re: 1989 GM Engineering Project Direction

Good call... I forgot about Chevy-Pont- Canada too!!

Thanks for clearing that up

Brings up a new question... Norwood and Van Nuys are both in the US, why Canada?
