Was the underhood and under carriage paint clear coat? What kind of paint did the factory use?

 

The underhood and undercarriage overspray were not clear coated. They were just sprayed with the body color. Only the exterior surfaces were cleared.

 

The inner fenders and other under hood surfaces were not considered to be "Class A" surfaces, nor the cowl or underbody. As such, they will feel "rougher" and not as "finished", also lacking clear coat and final finish details of the outer body.

@rarebmx and I had this discussion with a friend of mine who worked at the Van Nuys plant in the 3rd Gen era. The question came about after looking at the thin paint under the hood of car.

 

Thanks I'm about to pull my motor and I want to clean it up as much as I can. I might do some touch up here and there.
