History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Chevrolet decided that they didn't want to pay somebody (the International Race Of Champions series) to race Chevrolets against other Chevrolets and let the contract for the use of the name lapse after Dec 31 1989. Production of Z28s with the IROC package ceased on that date, which of course was partway into the 90 model year.
I would note also, just FYI, that before Chevrolet licensed the IROC name, they used Camaros for awhile; were hooked up with Porsche off and on; then after that, Dodge, who released the "Daytona" which was a little weenie front-wheel-drive econobox of some sort; then after that no one was willing to pay them for their name, and they ended up using Firebirds without any promotion at all (can't even recall anybody saying the word "Firebird" during broadcasts, there were no logos, etc.) for the last few years that the series existed. Seems like they all had True-Value Hardware and then Crown Royal as the sponsor, I guess maybe the series sponsor but I don't know. Which was up to around 2006 or so, can't remember exactly when they ceased operation. GM didn't use IROC in marketing anymore after Jan 1 1990 though, not for Camaro, Firebird, or any other product.
