History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Hello. When these cars were new on gray interior cars, were the floor carpets the exact same color as the console carpets on say an 87 cars? Were the console carpets a little darker? I'm sure guys with the low mileage cars can answer if their cars were garage kept. Thanks Chris.
It was the same color carpet used for both, so the color should be the same. What you might see is discoloration due to the floor position and the the UV damage. Why does it impact the floor more than the side? I don't know, but it's not only grey cars. I have an '82 with blue carpet and the console is now a different shade than the console.
Comparing a new piece of carpet to an old piece of carpet of the same color, the colors will always be "off." Comparing a new piece of carpet to another new piece of the same color, even from the same dye lot, the colors can look "off."
Viewing angles make a difference. For example, looking up the carpet(rear to front), where it's grain is partially laying down, so you're looking mostly at the sides of the carpet fibers, the color will have a lighter appearance. Looking down the same piece of carpet(front to rear), where its grain is partially standing up, so you're kind of looking into the tops and down into the depths of the carpet fibers, the color will have a darker appearance. Even looking across the grain of the same piece of carpet(side to side), it will have a slightly different color, yet.
So for this topic, where some carpet is laid vertically(on the sides of the console), and some carpet is laid horizontally(on the floor), the colors will always look "off," regardless that each piece is the exact same color, even if each piece is cut from the same larger piece, whether each piece is new, each piece is old, or one piece is new and the other old.
No matter what color someone chooses, it's going to have a slightly different appearance after its installed, due to the various angles at which its laid, and from which it will be viewed. And since ACC's colors aren't good matches anyway, then request several different samples that appear to be similar in color and trust your own judgement to select the one that best suites your interior. Because with the variety of different shades of the same color in the interior, seat color, door panel color, carpet color, floor mats, all of which are similar, but none of which are the same, better to try to coordinate and be happy, rather than try to "match" and be disappointed.
I'm assuming that the carpet used on the console is of a different make up than that on the floor, so it fades differently also. If it was all new, as discussed, the angle will give it the appearance of different shades, but as these cars have aged, it's clear that the carpet and console carpets have faded differently.
