Re: need a steering column
yea thats the vats ignition, supposed to be a security function but looses its value when it malfunctions. might work in my car though. 85 shipped might work, ive got part of that now, take me at least a few days to get the rest. in the meantime ill check and see if i can sue it being thats its out of a vats car. thanks.

Dokken, Camfire,
Do either of you still have a column available? If so, are they from manual transmission cars? I'm looking for one since a few parts are broken in my 87.

Mine are from A/T cars. I believe the only difference is the ignition switch has a button on it on M/T and the neutral safety switch from the shifter on A/T.

Re: need a steering column
I just looked at the 91 Firebird columns I have for my car and the ignition switch on the M/T has the release button and the A/T column does not have the button. The M/T has no cable to the shifter and the A/T has a cable.
Re: need a steering column
Hmm. Since there are only a few components that I need, I could probably pirate them from an auto trans column. That would take care of the turn signal/high beams parts that I need. The only thing left is the lower plastic shroud (below where the 'tilt joint' is). That part is unique for auto vs manual columns, since there is a difference where the release button lever sticks out. It might be feasible to simply add a cutout for the lever on the plastic from an auto column.
Thanks for the reply. I'll have to decide if it is worth the effort to add a cutout to the plastic shroud, or if it is worth it to repair all of the column except the shroud. I'll let you know if I decide to give it a shot with an automatic column.
