Re: WANTED: 1990-1992 Camaro Z28 Steering Wheel (GOOD condition)

The problem was the requirement was the 1990-1992 Camaro Z28 steering wheel. The steering wheel you have is out of a 90-92 RS.

There were two different types of steering wheels for 1990 - 1992. Leather and Simulated Leather (Vinyl) [shiny] (sometimes referred to "Plastic") probably because it tend to have a bit of a sticky plastic feel to it.

1990 (IROC-Z) & 1991 - 1992 Z28's came with the Leather steering wheel which had molded leather wrapped around it with visible leather strings holding it together.

1990 - 1992 RS's had the Vinyl AKA "Plastic" (shiny) simulated leather steering wheels. You can quickly distinguish both because there are no string holding it together.

Well ALL 1982-1992 Z28 had *A* leather steering wheel, just the 1990-1992 had an airbag built into them :-)

I had bought the Z28 steering wheel (complete with Airbag) from ebay years ago and was ripped off when it arrived as the "PLASTIC" RS version when they showed pictures of the Z28 Leather version.

Both fit the same. I've never personally come across a 1990 IROC-Z / 1991 - 1992 Z28 factory with the "Plastic" version before though unless it was changed by the owner at one point.

Both versions tend to have a different feel to them. The "plastic" is shiny and has a somewhat stickiness to them whereas the leather version had a drier, more comfortable (in my opinion) feel to them.

It would also have to have an AIRBAG because I've called around and NO ONE (not even the Chevrolet Dealership) will INSTALL an airbag into a steering wheel due to the lethal possibilities of installing it.

LEATHER (Note the visible strings showing on the inner side of the wheel)

VINYL "Plastic", simulated leather.

Note: Airbag missing from the one above ;-)
