Opinions on wood steering wheel and shift ****?

My leather wrapped steering wheel oozes black goo from the beam right where I hold the wheel. I heard this is something used to prevent the leather from slipping. I am going to try an cover it but I assume the goo may work its way through the seam on the wrap.

I am thinking of swapping wheels (My 86 does not have air bags) and am thinking wood might be a nice touch. The car is immaculate inside and is unmodified except for a 4th gen seat and plans for 4th gen seat belt front and rear.

Do any of you have pictures or thoughts on this?
