a/c and heater vent not switching from defrost to bi-level

iam havin a problem with my vent not switching from the defrost to the floor. it only blows out of the defrost vent , im not sure if its a vacume leak or what. if some one could help it would be very appreiciated thnks -chad-

Generally when that happens it is a vacuum issue, either a hose is, broken, cracked, off or pinched. The blowing out the defrost vents is the default in case of a failure.

You would need to pull the whole dash and diverter box under the dash in order to verify. Try replacing the AC panel first before you get into removing everything.

I believe no vacuum = defroast only. Chances are the hose is cracked under the hood. Should run from the intake to a one-way check valve. It should then run into the inside of the car (and I believe a vacuum tank under the battery tray).

Check all those first before pulling the dash apart.

Pull out the control unit and look at the diaphragm on the back. Its where you have like 5-9 vacuum lines going in, looks like a wheel. Make sure the wheel isn't loose, that its snug against the rubber seal. I've seen a lot of failures on older GM vehicles from this.
