Trans Am 1984 Knee Pad Replacement

Whats the best way to replace the knee pad on a 1984 TA console. Do I take the console out or do I pry it off with a screw driver. Not sure what to do. Thanks!

I find it way easier to remove the shift plate and or console to remove the knee pad. I once removed it by prying and screwed up the clips and bent the metal frame.
