Speedo Rebuild Question

My old cable drive speedo is basically worn out. It catches and stumbles and makes funny noises. I picked up a cheap guage set from a V-6 on Ebay which is low miles and in great shape but just has the idiot lights. Would it be hard to swap just the guts of the speedo into my set? Also can I swap just the speedo part and not the odometer? My car is in metric and has the tripmeter. The V-6 guages are miles and no trip. Any advise is appreciated.

you can swap out speedos, there are a couple screws on the back that hold it in, remove them and itll just pop out. but be carefull...cuz its sensitive.

It may well be that the speedo head is in perfect health and the speedo cable itself is the culprit.

With the cluster removed, yank the cable from its housing. Unscrew the housing from the tranny and shoot brake clean or some other cleaner down the housing until the fluid is clear. Button back up. Clean the cable itself, then put a dab of Napa's Sil-Glyde (mentions speedo lube on the tube) in your palm and run the cable through it as you thread the cable back into the housing. You'll probably have to manipulate the cable a bit to reseat it in the speedo sleeve.

I would almost agree with you James but........
The speedo works fine at lower speeds, then when I hit a bump at around 60mph it starts making a very noticable grinding sound and the indicated speed jumps to between 70 and 80 mph and bounces around a bit. I have to slow down to 30 or 40 mph and the speedo smoothes out and the noise goes away until the next bump. (It behaves worse in the cold). These things lead me to believe it is something in the speedo not the cable but I'll try the cable first since that will be easier. Thanks.
