Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

Before I finished installing my interior panels in the car I noticed some of you on the boards are using sound deadening material on your interiors. I saw one car where the individual lined the entire inside of the car with dynamat. I am installing new jute fabric for padding on the carpet and I haven't put adhesive down to set it yet and I was wondering, is the dynamat really beneficial? I don't mind spending the extra money to buy the stuff and install it. Those of you who have it, have you noticed a difference? I was my car to be smooth and quiet. Also, this extra weight doesn't bother me at all. More or less i wanted to know if this stuff does the trick and if not, what would be better. Thanks for any insight/ advise as always. -Bob

Yes apply sound damping to the whole car if you want it quiet. http://www.mmxpress.com/cascade/cascade.htm This is what I used alittle cheaper than dynamat but just as good. And it weighs less cause it is vinyl based not asphalt.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

Make sure you check out a product called "second skin". It's a very popular product on the car audio boards, and the owner of the company is one of those down to earth kind of guys who posts on the forums himself. I haven't used his stuff myself yet, but it comes very highly recommended by those who have.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

U should go to home depo and pick your self up some “peel and seal” it will be in the roofing section, and its about 1/4th the price. I did my hole car with about 6 rolls, and it did an amazing job.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

I have heard people speak of the peel and seal before. Is it something like "ice and water" for a roof? Thanks for the recommendation on the second skin. I will most likely look into this esp. if its highly suggested by members of the board. Thanks. -Bob

great article, had read it a while back. almost picked up some of that stuff in the roofing section, but decided against it based on a busy weekend. will have to head back to the depot soon and pick it up, especially after again re-reading that article...

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

I've thought about doing this, but decided I like the tone and rumble of my exhaust more than the little rattles... Good luck either way, I might change my mind in the future...

It will work for certain applications. It's not as stable in high heat conditions, so sitting right above the cat, it will probably melt and the black goo will make a mess under your carpet. It also can fall down from roofs and trunklids in hot climates, which can make a royal mess. Likewise, it can come off of the inside of doors in hot climates and make a mess of your window tracks. But in more moderate climates or in areas that won't see a lot of heat (like trunk floors), it can be a cheap alternative. I used it inside the doors of my fiance's camry and it seems to be working well.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

Jim, assuming I just mount the Peel and Seal on the floor pan of my camaro I shouldn't have a problem with it falling off technically then right? Just trying to find something that is cheap and lightweight to quiet down the camaro just a bit. Don't need to put it on the doors or firewall.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

well, technically it would be impossible for it to fall off the floor, but the heat from your cat and/or exhaust may cause it to turn into black tar goo which could still make quite a mess. The stuff isn't the most lightweight stuff in the world either. Most products made specifically for this purpose are lighter and weight and just as effective. I think the peel & seal route is fine for a POS beater car (i.e. 95% of all thirdgens), but if you've got a nice car, I think using this stuff constitutes a hack.

Alright, definately have the true duals down the center and the floor gets kinda hot, which one do you recommend that would be lightweight as well as heat resistant?

Any of the lightweight products with the foil on the top will work. Damplifier or Damplifier Pro from Second Skin should suit your needs nicely.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

I've used Second Skin Products with very good results.. well except for the adhesive spray. That didn't work well.
Damplifier with a layer of Overkill on top.
well worth the money I spent.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

Dynamat Extreme worked great fro me.I am not into the stereo crap. What I wanted was noise reduction from road and other things such as rain drops on the roof. I lined the roof doors and entire floorboad and cargo area with it and it makes the car feel like a new luxury car in noise/vibration feeling- very nice.

As for the heat, it is amazing here also. You can no longer feel any heat under the passenger floor (above the catalytic convertor) nor can you feel anything at all on the trans tunnel. My kid used to complain that the center hump between the rear seats would get hot on her arm if she leaned on it. This is the real reason why I went to the best quality NON-spray-in material I researched. Worked great for me, I now have an entire new feeling vehicle when I drive this car- I have owned it for 15 years and can tell you what a difference it made first hand.http://www.cardomain.com/ride/518752/9

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

I got the jute from an upholstery shop. It was $7 a yard and supposedly it takes 4 yards, so $28. Its much better looking then the stock stuff. It is much thicker. When I was buying it at the shop, I asked the owner about sound deadener. He was quite knowledgeable on the subject, having built some high dollar street rod interiors. He told me a funny story, someone he knew wanted to put some dynamat or a similar asphalt product in their street rod. He said the guy used roofing shingles... With the stone/ mineral side down... He said it worked great. It was a 32 ford coupe that did not see daily driver action. Imagine lining the interior of your bird or camaro with 2 square of shingles... Not me! -Bob

those stones scratch paint, then rust...
I guess you could fill it with water too, wait, that will rust too, dammit!

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

Note that 100 square feet of sound deadening will add an average of 30 pounds to your car, 100 square feet is a TON of sound deadening. I usually use about 25 square feet to deaden a car and I use peel n seal, BUT I will warn you that it comes in different flavors. The stuff I get is a really really high quality product I buy from Bender Lumber. I've seen some stuff that is gooey and melted at room temprature (Gutter Gaurd from Lowes is an example) and I wouldn't put that in my car if I had to.

Re: Q's about Dynamat and other sound deadening material

I just added Second Skin throughout the interior of my car. It's a little quieter now but not a huge difference, it should help reduce radiant heat too. The stereo system does sound better though.
