Re: Air Bags

Can a 90 airbag column be put in an older 3rd gen? And what would it take to do it.

Thanks

Re: Air Bags

I suppose anything is possible, but I'd have to say no. The airbag is a fairly sophisticated piece of safety equipment that involves a lot more than just the steering column. There's additional wiring, sensors, accelerometers, etc. And since they are an integral part of the vehicle design, it is extremely dangerous and not recommended to retrofit airbags into a vehicle that does not have them.
Some shade-tree mechanics might say why not, but I wouldn't trust him, or the conversion, if he attempted to do so.
Also you need to look at it from an insurance coverage point of view as well. Would they look at this type of conversion favourably? What if a sensor was installed just slightly improperly and she went off while driving or due to a minor bump/collision and somebody gets hurt or killed? The investigators will pick up on that immediately and you could get screwed even beyond your injuries.
Lot's of things to think about. If you really want one, buy a >='90 model.

PS;In July 11/84 the U.S. government required cars being produced after Apr 1/89 to have driver's side air bags. Thus it was the '90 production models that had them (since they were being built at the time).

Re: Air Bags

90 it is! Mama says Jr has to have an airbag car. But there are so many good looking 80's third gens.

Oh well that narrows down the field.

Thanks
