Saggy Headliner

Hey guys, my headliner is sagging is some spots, but not everywhere. How would I go about fixing it without changing the whole thing?

Re: Saggy Headliner

You don't fix it, you should just recover it unless you put a buttload of thumb tacks to hold it up

Since it is Spring, that headliner will not last still next Winter. Take it to a Auto Reuphostery shop and get it done. By the time you buy the materials and find the time the costs will be the same around $150. My opinion

I recovered mine for like $20, the material is cheap and the glue is cheap

Whow.. Iron Duke, what'd you get that fixed yours for just $20? Mines pretty ugly, but I won't worry about it YET... but it needs at least to be held up a bit better than it is right now.

Re: Saggy Headliner

If your car is a hardtop, recovering your current headliner isn't really that hard if you're at least somewhat familiar with similar projects such as carpeting a speaker box. Sometimes you can luck out and get some headliner fabric cheaply at Jo Ann Fabrics, but their color selection is usually very limited. You can buy bulk material online with a much better color selection. If you have a t-top car, recovering the headliner is considerably more difficult. Because the material has no stretch at all, wrapping it around the inner t-top radiuses is virtually impossible to do well. If you do have t-tops, I would suggest coughing up the money to buy a new replacement headliner that's already covered. For info on the material or the headliner, feel free to PM me.

I got the material at Joann Fabrics, got 3 yards for $16.

It's not too tough to do, I did mine after work one day. Took a couple hours, and it turned out pretty good.

Re: Saggy Headliner

My friends dad owns a 79 and an 85 corvettes. They 85 is a hardtop so instead of replacing or repairing the headliner he just ripped it down, chisseled away all that spongey yellow crap and just painted the what was under that. I guess it wasnt that bad looking.

Re: Saggy Headliner

hmm, so that foamy stuff underneath it.. will I have to replace that then...? Or should that be just fine? Mine's a hardtop, so I guess it shouldn't be TOO bad.

Re: Saggy Headliner

You need to remove the foam. I've found that a stiff-bristled brush works great for removing it. I use a small potato brush that I found in a grocery store.

Re: Saggy Headliner

hah, that's just it.. I'm working on a budget. I was going to do the fabric myself, as one of those kits are QUITE pricey, so I didn't know if you could buy just the foam itself.

Re: Saggy Headliner

Ok, don't laugh but I did this with a 1978 Camaro and now I'm planning on doing it to my 1991 Camaro.Without removing any of the trim I carefully cut and take out the old headliner material, scrape all the old glue off whats left really good.Next I buy some of that fake fur,I'm planning grey to match my carpet and interior and I'm also putting it on the sides in the backseat area . I used the spray on adhesive before and it stayed up for 10 years! Hey don't laugh...I like fur!
